Featured Replies

Did anyone see the bit on Top gear about Swindon getting rid of its speed cameras............well Clarksons words were ....don't be silly they will be watching to see if this works, so keep your speed down and the rest of the country may follow suit........

Went shopping in Swindon last night  ........seems no one wants to follow his advice and it was like a race track......there's that idea down the drain then

I must state the only place now where people seem to speed is Queens Drive and the Duel alongside MFI.

I think with the cost of fuel - It's starting to cause people to drive alot slower.

Lets hope more places follow suit...

Most places in swindon are fast...... apart from the magic roundabaout, that's fun when it's quiet!!

Their plan IIRC would be to install that tarmac that creates bad rumble over the posted speed.

Only seen this used in 30 & 40 zones so far tho. Stick to the limit and it's smooth(ish), but must be wearing the tyres quite a bit.

I read on (PH I think) that the actual thing is that Swindon want to keep the the money from the SCs and not sending it back to government!

I think the main complaint is that the council are paying 400,000 a year to maintain and are not getting anything back.

Doesnt it wee wee you off a bit that someone else pays to put these cameras in that take money for speeding, and its your council tax paying to maintain them. Bit of a double whammy for some people.

As I read it, Swindon Council pays £400,000 per year towards the cameras, as part of a partnership covering ALL of Wiltshire, including the nearby M4, but all fines are paid straight to central government.

Their argument is that their share of the money could be better spent locally on other safety measures.

It shouldnt be a profit maker but surely if it costs the council that kinda money, for definite the money can be spent better locally. I wonder if they'll drop in speed bumps instead - it's possible I guess, that would be expensive too though, in fairness.
