Long Stroke/Short Stroke

Featured Replies

hmmmmmm, Am I right In thinking that a Long Stroke engine is like a diesel and Produces more torque but less horsepower, like a diesel, whereas a short stroke engine revs high and produces lots of HP but not much Torq?

Just someone at work asked, but I wanted to be sure! :)

p.s is the 1.4 75hp Fairly long stroke?, it's Redline is at 5k, does it lean toward torqe rather tan HP?

Yeah, you're right in long/short stroke, but the bhp isn't necessarily the case.

BHP is the rate at which an engine does work, and so is essentially the number of strokes in a given time multiplied by the number of strokes.

A longstroke will not be able to rev so high without shaking itself to bits, but will exert more force per stroke.

Shortstroke will be able to rev higher but won't produce as much force per stroke.

So things will pretty much balance out, and the only difference is in application (ie. heavy vehicles need a lot of low down torque to get them moving, while in sports cars it's good to have a wide power band).

Suspect the 1.4 will be a fairly short stroke, being a petrol engine...

Thanks, thought so :)

Quoted figures are for bore x stroke in mm

1.4 75hp - 76.5 x 75.6

1.6 102hp - 81.0 x 77.4

2.0 115hp - 82.5 x 92.8

1.8 20V Turbo 150/180hp - 81.0 x 86.4

1.9 SDI/TDI 68hp/90/110hp - 79.5 x 95.5

Grrr...

Don't talk to me about long stroke vs short stroke. The first car I ever owned was a 1963 998cc Ford Anglia.

The engine was based on a smaller (pre-war) block, bored out to 998cc. As a result, it was over-square (bore greater than stroke). It didn't have enough torque to pull the skin off a rice pudding. To add insult to injury, the gearbox - while claiming to be four-speed - was actually three-speed plus overdrive. "Fourth" was actually an overdrive ratio!

OK, rant over. It's just the effect the Blue Oval has on me. Sorry... :o

Did you ever have the lid of the steering box lift off in use!! Made the steering go from carp (anag.) to shopping trolley ...and on a motorway!

Where do you get these things :)

So 5000rpm red line seems quite low then really.

A decent cam and suitable remap (increasing the limiter to say 6500) should be able to make serious power gains...

Yeah the Difference between the 1.4 75hp and the 1.4 100hp, is that basically the 100hp is toughened a bit, and then has it's limiter increased by 1000rpm, but i still have the satisfaction of knowing I get more low down power than the 100hp :)

Probably another marketting thing, no-one would pay the extra for the 16v if it was only 10bhp more.
