Handbrake Question

Featured Replies

Hi all.

I had my rear discs and pads changed around 1,000 miles/ 2 1/2 months ago and I've noticed my handbrake

a) isnt very good - it takes around 6-7 clicks to stop it rolling down a slight incline and around 10 to stop it on a steep hill, even then the rear end still creaks - I've also noticed that in wet and cold weather the handbrake is even worse

B) today I have noticed that when I aplly the handbrake on a steep hill the passenger side rear seems to pull up really high and the driver side not as much.

Help/ advice appreciated.

try and park on roads with a camber to balance out the non adjusted handbrake.

Ive had my VRS from new and the most i have ever needed to use the handbrake was 4 clicks and that was on a massive incline.

Sounds like the handbrake cable needs tightening??

Matt

Did you get a main dealer to carry out this work? Sound like the adjustment in the rear callipers is either not working or the wrong procedure has been used. Remember that the handbrake levers should be able to reach (and should be returned to) their stops when the handbrake is off. When the handbrake is on both levers should be roughly at the same angle if both sides are okay - if you are checking at the handbrake end the equaliser link should be sitting "straight" and not angled to one side. In my feeble experience, handbrake cables do not need lots of adjusting - unless they are starting to break and/or are seizing up.

I don't know if it works on skodas but it used to work on citroens with the LHM systems.

Put your foot on the brakes and push them well down, then with it still down pull up the handbrake and release the footbrake. If it's work you will notice the handbrake getting tighter.

your rear pads aren't bedded in properly yet ?

but its only 2 days ago It started pulling up higher on the left hand side than the drivers side when on an incline and applying the handbrake in full

If it comes to it, the adjuster is behind the rear ashtray thingamijig, although ISTR the Lummster told me the rear wheels need to be off the ground before you start tinkering...

SWMBO's Fabia has the same problem, think its more due to age than anything else though. How much should i expect to pay to have the handbrake tightened at a normal local garage (i am young, i must learn these things lol)

Adjusting my wife's was just done at service. As long as it holds (eventually!) it's safe, although it would appear be a sign of worn rear shoes, as that came up next time my wife's was in the garage and afterwards the handbrake came on after only one or two click (over-tightened?)...
