Mazda 6 MPS (old shape)

Featured Replies

Has anybody driven one of these/know someone who has one? I will be looking to change my VRS TFSI when it turns 3 yrs old (few months off yet) and these Mazda's seem like huge value at the moment - anyone had any experience?

vRSFred

We have a member on here who had one for a while before he got a MX5, I'm sure he'll be along soon

PittVRS had one for sure.

I love the Mazda 3 MPS, the engine is simply awesome, but the fuel economy put me off.

I nearly bought a second hand one 2.0 Diesel 143 ps TS2 last year.Thought would be reliable (Mazda- Jap) and they got nice reviews for chassis etc. Did some research on the unit .... (2.0 Diesel CAz..?) I came across some horror stories - failing CAV pumps to main bearing failures, turbos etc. These were on cars generally above 60-70K . Cambelt change 60K is £ 800+ . The petrol ones are apparently fine / good reliable. I needless to say didn't buy one but an Octy 1.8TSI

 says the man currently showing 26.7 mpg! I think the depreciation would have put you off more

The 3mps is said to be pretty good on fuel but the 6 not so good as its bigger and 4wd. The problem with the 6mps seems to be lack of badge prestige, rather plain looks (good sleeper) and obviously the fuel/tax implications in the future.

Seeing as the engine is the same as the 3 there's been a few issues with turbos and the odd valve but nothing too bad. I would hope the 6 doesn't have the engine mount problem from the early 3s.

Roy will probably be along this evening to give the driving/owning experience :)

thanks for replies so far - look forward to hearing some more. There is a particular car for sale at an independant dealer near me at the moment (in Horsham, W Sussex) - car is on a 56 plate with 2,700 miles on clock and is up for £12,995 - that just seems incredible value to me for such a capable car. Anyone know of anything out there better value??

vRSFred

That is amazing value for sure!

I dare you ......you know you want.:P

I was quite tempted until I found out the seats don't fold - it just wouldn't have enough room for me.

Nice try! :P

Hi I've finally decided to reply!

Yes I did own a 6MPS for 10 months and traded it in for an MX-5 in March this year. It was a very rapid car and as stable as a rock at (very) high speeds. The steering was pin sharp for a big saloon, and the ride was extremely comfortable, a lot better than the Mk 1 Octy vRS I had before. The kit was excellent inside and it was a very comfortable place to be for long drives.

Why I got rid after such a short time? The car was heavy and the weight sapped some of the power, I would have loved to get it re-mapped, but tuners for this engine were few and far between at the time. It was a big car but to it's credit it felt a lot smaller when you went down a country road.

It was also a bit too comfy sometimes, like you could be haring along at licence losing speeds and not really notice the drama. In fact that was why I eventually got shut, I was stopped for speeding in it, I got the face on sooo bad and got to thinking "It's pointless having a fast car these days, they cost too much, the tax is astronimical, etc, etc..."

The fuel economy was pretty poor, but you don't buy a fast car for the fuel economy really. The CO2 was very poor, I think it'll be in the £400 tax bracket with some 4x4's having better emissions than the 6 MPS.

So the real reason I got rid of it was I was bitter about the current traffic policy of our beloved Government! The trade in value almost gave me a heart attack, but the 56 plate you are looking at shouldn't really depreciate as drastically as mine, as the previous owners have absorbed the initial big hit.

I would urge you to test drive the car even if it's just to say it's not right for you. Do I miss it? Sometimes yes I do, the acceleration and overtaking power were immense, and it was a good looking car, it definitely had road presence.

But also consider the 3MPS if that's big enough for you, and the Saab Turbo X is also worth a look but probably far too expensive just now.

Feel free to PM me with any questions.

i had a mazda 6 ts diesel 143 ps, lovely car. test drove the mps aswell, id still have one now if i could afford the insurance over my vRS

My MPS rocks :D

We all know TomTom wants one but he doesnt have the balls :P

If balls = money, then you're right, no I don't! :(

Thats never stopped you before :P

Hey if you kept a car for a year or so Tom then you could probably afford to buy one instead of chucking money away ;)

its only a valve on the fuel pump that fails , pump off for repair, dead easy job

never seen a turbo go on one , and only ever seen/heard small end bearing failures, usually related to the later DPF equipped engine, as this system pumps extra fuel into the engine to super heat the DPF system, but most of this fuel ends up in the engine oil

you say the cambelt change is £800 , the change is usually done in conjuction

with the relevant service , now done at 75k miles , which is a big service , but is AFAIK nowhere near an £800 bill , not even in the SE

the belt replacement as a separate job , takes less than 2 hours labour , belts are about £75 iirc

clutches are bit weak and are quite a big job to do

Many thanks for your reply pittVRS - spot on useful. The lack of hatch versatility and rear folding seats are a problem (as is higher insurance & fuel bills vs my Octy II vRS) but it does still seem very tempting for that amazing performance/standard kit/value for money blend. Like you say, I will have to actually get on & drive one & see if that makes up my mind for me.

cheers

Is it worse than 26.7mpg?

No worries mate, but In that case speak to NeoVR, the 3MPS is your friend.....;)

26.7mpg was only for 150 miles of hooning around, and I spilled about 2l of fuel on the floor because the pump didn't cut off. I'm confident of 30+mpg when I settle down with it. :)

You'll probably tip 30-32 on a run, but apart from that :)

Would reckon on 28 running about.

Steve
