vrs spare wheel

Featured Replies

Just got my first VRS! Few issues, its a 53 plate and the external tempreature display doesnt work. All the other functions are fine, but no temp display?

And the spare wheel has those yellow stickers on it limiting the wheel to 50mph - but its a full size rim, with a 205/45/16 83w rated tyre on it - should'nt a space saver be smaller?

It's not a space saver but I think its speed limited because of being a directional tyre (50% chance of running the wrong way) and steel rather than alloy (heavier)

Re: Temp display. The sensor connection is behind the front bumper, it'd be worth checking this is not adrift.

Pics on how to access it Fig #7 HERE

Re: Spare Wheel AFAIK it's a full size spare and as such is not limited to 50mph. I'm sure our resident Master Tech can confirm either way.

HTH

it is a directional tyre but if fitted the correct way is not speed restricted, the wrong way round tho i would go steady if fitted.

My old Fabia had a full sized steel (as they all do), didn't have directional tyres on it and still had the yellow warning sticker on it. Never been able to figure out why they have a warning sticker on them, been discussed a few times on here and no one as far as I remember has come up with a good reason.

If the spare is a directional tyre, does that not mean it can only be used on one side of the car? Not very practical. I've taken mine out, so I can't remember if it was a directional tyre.

Due to time constraints I happily drove around on a "speed limited" spare for three weeks driving as normal with no problems. The tyre was the same as all the alloys and, although it was symmetrical (i.e. it had "inside" and "outside" markings) it wasn't directional (i.e. "left" and "right" markings). I even checked the speed rating and it was all the same.

I have heard stories of diffs going (not on these cars) if you have a heavily worn and new tyre on the same axle (as well as it being seriously unsafe), so perhaps that would be a reason for taking it easy if it's mounted on the front?

I could see the need for the sticker if it was a skinny spare, but it's not.

Personally, I think the big yellow sticker is there to embarrass you into betting the puncture fixed!

Yeah the yellow sticker is just a jip, no purpose

Don't mean to 'black cat' here but due to financial constraints I drove on a same size steel spare an the front of my ashtray G 2.0 16v for about a year, flat out, everywhere, with no problems apart from wearing the spare out.............

I must point out that it wasn't cos I was too pikey to buy a tyre, I split me rim up the centre in a pothole and couldn't find a replacement like for like and couldn't afford the £150 for a single rim that vaux wanted (+ tyre)

The council are sh1ts around here

Mine is exactly like that. I ignored the sticker, as the tyre is a 83W Sport Contact 2 just like the other 4. I asked the same question a good while ago, and no-one knew, apart from maybe it is in case directional tyres are fitted.

I've been meaning to remove the sticker.

My question is at http://briskoda.net/fabia-i/vrs-spare-tyre-spacesaver/68392/

I asked about the speed restriction on the spare when I bought my VRS from a Skoda garage and I was told that that sticker is put on because if you need to use the spare tyre you should drive more steadily (eg. below 50mph) as you don't have another spare available should you have another flat.

thats the weirdest excuse i've ever heard.

probably legal issue disclaimer as its a spare, maybe to stop someone using 4 of them as wheels and then claiming they were not told they should be a spare only...

No reason why you cant use four of them though.

Sounds like an **** covering excuse to me.....

lol, if punctures were speed related, we'd all be on flats!!!

The excuse I got from the dealer was that the tyre is directional, he then tried to show me the arrow (on the Michelin Pilot) and it doesn't have one, because it isn't directional. He then tried to show me the arrow on a vRS in the showroom with Continentals, didn't have one, not directional either.

The sticker is utter, total B*&^ocks unless you have a directional tyre fitted to it, and have it fitted in a position where it is running backwards. Belts and braces, H&S gone mad, you decide. I guess maybe they think the sticker needs to be there just in case somebody ever did fit a directional tyre to the spare wheel. Then again, why not have have a sticker saying 'non-directional tyres only' on the wheel instead.

i wonder if all skoda spare wheels get a sticker slapped on in the factory as a standard practice, maybe before a tyre is even fitted, does the 16" steel get used as a space saver in other models?

that way he stickered 16" steel may be a space saver or a normalsize depending on which model it ends up in and wearing different tyres.

it all means i only needed to buy one new tyre the first time i needed new fronts and the still legal but worn in now swopped onto the steel to act as a spare.

cheers matt.

I totally ignored the stickers on the wheel when I got 3 flat tyres in a row.

fortunately for me not all at the same time...

I drove the car as normal, hard acceleration and 130mph top at time...

not a problem. I never said 130mph ok just 70mph really. he he he

so the restriction printed on the wheel are for insurance purposes only. they cover SKODA UK against a law suit if an accident occurs on a spare wheel.

Up to ou how you all drive your spares, but really we should use them for as little time as possible. I was forced to do the same though and drove for about 2 weeks on this wheel as I needed to change 2 in one go really.

I just had to get rid of that rubbish continential tyres the car was supplied in.

now I have Goodyear eagle F1 GDS3's all round and o my 2 track day wheels too. brilliant tyre, wet and dry, no complaints.

am open to change so any suggestions.

Spaace savers are usually thin skinny wheels and they usually recommend not fitting them to the front wheels.

If its a full size spare then you can carry on as normal.

Alloys weigh more than steel wheels :)

I would think that it's the directional thing as you only want to run as little as possible on it.

I reckon that's it.

Nope, only the Fabia vRS has that sticker.

Nope, only the Fabia vRS has that sticker.

Must be in case of directional tyres then.

Must be in case of directional tyres then.

So why doesnt every spare have one on?

So why doesnt every spare have one on?

Dunno. It just seems odd that the Fabia vRS you had, and the one I have, has 4 alloys and one steel wheel, with 5 identical non-directional tyres, but a warning on the spare.

Is it to take account of the fact that some vRSs come with directional tyres from the factory, so all of them get the sticker in case? Mine has non-dircetional Conti SC2 tyres, but others have directionals.

I'd guess other Fabias are less likely to have directional tyres.
