Featured Replies

Hi guys i need some help.

I have a company car coming soon and the insurance is only third party so i need some kind of insurance to cover my belongings in the car should it be broken into.

The only suggestion from work is get your house contents insurance to cover it, well this is a no no as i live with my parents and so dont have any myself

any ideas??

many thanks

Endsleigh do insurance for all sorts of funny things (I used them when I was a student), so maybe try them?

Thanks just had a look, they do a lot of stuff but nothing suitable.

Thanks

Probably a good idea to keep your belongings in a bag and remove them when not with the car? (if practical)

TPFT on a company car!

That's very unusual. I'd check your contract to make sure they aren't going to hold you liable in the event of an "at fault" accident

My company car has the same policy - I make sure I don't leave anything valuable in there when I'm not with the vehicle (unless its parked in the locked CCTV compound at work).

The best any thieves will get is a couple of cheesy CDs, some chewing gum and my work PPE from the boot.

yea loads of companies use Third party only (NOT TPFT) basically its cheaper to pay out when needs be than pay the extorsionate insurance bill. I am def not liable although if i do something really stupid i will obviously be disciplined! a coleague of mine recently lost his car driving into a flooding ford (dont ask) but he wasnt even told off lol.

This maybe my only option then, its not so bad if im away working its more on the weekend if i go camping (i marshal at race circuits) id like to be covered.

sounds like my only option really!

Talk to your parents. Their company should be able to offer an extension to their contents policy which would cover things like "your stuff you left in a car".

Yea could be interesting, ill give it a try though.

I think most companies only ever cover the audio equipment or maybe the contents if the car gets damaged in the event of an accident or fire but prob not theft.

That's what home insurance companies want you to think, is that your effects in a car are only covered under vehicle contents cover, which is capped in value. Extending contents cover to cover things like camera kit whereever it is is quite common amongst people who have SLR outfits.

maybe even worth taking my own contents insurance then? i know its only like 7 quid a month

No. The portables cover is an extra you take out on a contents policy. So to do what you're suggesting you'd have to insure the home contents twice, and the insurers wouldn't pay out twice in the event of, say, a fire. Indeed, they might claim the 2 policies as evidence of intended fraud and refuse to pay out at all.

If you look at your parents contents insurance it will almost certainly say for all persons and family residing at the property.

Just make sure that the policy says that and that the level of cover is suitable for your needs in terms of value and type of loss.

No need to buy your own then.

point taken, only trouble is my dad is a stubbon old git lol

Our Nationwide insurance covers portables upto £500 in value each, max total claim £1000. Includes jewellery, cash, clothing and portable electronics such as mobiles, sat nav, laptop, PDA......

Should be covered under parents policy as you live there. Check their policy docs ;)

Just tell him that if your stuff isn't covered and it gets knicked then you won't be able to pay your keep :D

Try contacting your companys insurers to see if you can upgrade the cover.
