Parts required for timing chain change

Featured Replies

Hello.

I am planning to change the chain myself and have bought a chain and cover gasket from the local dealer. Guy who was selling parts said I don't need anything else but the oil filter and timing cover gasket. But now I read some threads here and found out that timing cover oil seal and the sump gasket are required as well. As it seems, I can not use his help ordering the parts and have to find the correct numbers myself. This is the point where I am asking your kind help. I suppose the oil sump gasket is number 11 on the image, but what number is the oil seal I need to buy?

Thanks, and sorry for my stupidity...

The parts man is correct in the absolute minimum amount of parts required, apart from where the sump is concerned, however it does make sense to replace the crankshaft pulley oil seal, as it will be easily accessible.

31 is the crankshaft pulley oil seal, from memory 047103085 - so check first, 11 is the sump, 12 is the sump plug and the gasket is shown between them without a number next to it. I saw a V registration one the other day, which did not have a gasket, just sealer. If you look at the sump it should be obvious if it is just sealed or has a gasket.

I never changed the crankshaft pulley oil seal when mine was done. It only needs replaced if it is knackered which is unlikely.

The parts i got for job were:

sump gasket

oil pick up gasket (number 44 in pic) cost 80p!!

timing cover gasket

timing chain with new sprockets

oil filter & fresh oil

Thanks guys, as I would like to avoid as much future troubles, as possible, I ordered the oil pickup/sump gasket and the cranckshaft seal as well. Due to a non-existant market here, have to wait another week for the parts to arrive :(

Is the timing chain oiled as the engine runs or does it run dry ?
