vRS engine terminally damaged

Featured Replies

Try cambelt automatic tensioner.

So the Hydraulic Damper are/is the tensioner

Same Mechanic that changed the cambelt and didn't use the whole kit including the damper?

Think that says enough about his knowledge on the subject.

Didnt have the car when the cambelt was changed.

Was done by the previous owner, so wasnt his fault at all!

Lets clear up a bit of confusion.

The damper is NOT part of a cambelt kit. However being as if it fails it does the same damage as if the tensioner fails surely it makes sense to change it so always add it to the kit.

The roller is an eccentric idler. The cente is bolted to the engine and as the lever on its side is moved it rotates around the centre. It is free to do this and not locked into place. The lever sits on top of a little oil damper. This damper pushes up on the roller and thus against the belt providing tension.

The only coded parts of any concern is the ecu, clocks, ignition immobiliser as if you dont have all 3 matched your car wont run! all other parts are pretty much interchangeable and at most would bring up an error code which you just wipe off with a scanner. I have chopped and messed about with Mk1 octy's for ages and never had a prob. If anything just use the one originally from your car cos if its coded to anything it will be your ecu as the engine is just a lump of metal and has nothing coded to it!
