New Talex Device

Featured Replies

Today arrived my new talex, out of the yellowy colour box i get my talex, with lots of paper. First telling me about updating it, checking the database it comes with mine was 8073 so only a few weeks out, neitheless i updated it with the new talex update program off the site which amazingly works with vista  the update seem to run and update quicker than the full fat one. However i found one problem it didnt like the old lead so i had to get the new lead out and worked straight away.

Also got a leaflet offering to let me know every two weeks how many new locations have been added and to remind me to update (a service they will eventually want to charge £19.99 a year for) but for the moment anyone who signs up will get it free, so ive signed up and will have to report back on this bit.

So i set the device up in the car, has a clearer lcd display (might be the old one is a bit tatty now), 2 leds one either side. the left one lights up when you come into any traps etc, the right one lights up the moment you drift over the speed limit. the actual voice warning wont warn you over speed till you are 5% over the limit (acpo police guidelines give you 10%+2mph).

When approching cameras etc it will do the usual warning, but will do a countdown from 5 to 1. each type will be given a letter, L=red light C=fixed camera, F=mobile camera and i cant remember off hand for specs (think its s). Dangerous bend flashes little squares and schools comes up flashing i beleive "info". it also still has the altitude, top speed, average speed, etc.

It no longer has buttons on the top but one button on the side next to the switch for d/l-cam-norm. by pressing this you can go through the options above (altitude etc) or hold it in for a few seconds till it bleeps and now it becomes the user position storage facility which you can store/delete user locations. It took a while to figure this out but works a treat.

Locations seem to be tidier now with this one to the full talex, where as on the full talex you drove up to the trap with it bleeping and then past the trap for 500 yds bleeping (on mobile ones) as once as you have reached a trap it will stop the bleeping and reset ready for the next trap, well this is what i have found so far anyway.

Im yet to find a redlight and spec camera (or bother with a congestion charge zone) but so far am happy with it.

The only down points is the volume, not as loud as i thought it be, yes it can go really loud (a similar issue if i remember correctly with the talex elite), but it becomes distorted. The unit is slightly noisier than the full fat (when its plugged into the pc) and the led's are very bright at night, im hoping these can be solved with a firmware update. The device seems to latch on to satellites fast, this one has got all satellites it would get in the car from my bedroom, where as the other struggled.

I really cannot think on anything else to comment on at moment as its nearly 3am and im knackered. will give it a good run over the next week to see what i really think of it.

I will no doubt keep adding to this thread, anyone who has bought one feel free to add what you think of it too.

Power socket is on the 'wrong' side for me :(

  • Author

yes have noticed its on the other side, for me its actually better on the left side.

how much did you pay for it?

for me its actually better on the left side.

I'll blame you then ;-)

Not a big deal - just makes my installation a little less tidy (By screen pillar on dvrs side)

I still maintain it's the same internals as if you look at the original board it's a doddle to put the switches and sockets elsewhere.

FWIW Is the power socket on this one is the same place as the USB connection goes in and in the same position as the old USB connection on the old one.

USB on opposite side (separate)

I think its just a re-shell, basically - but mine was getting very tatty, being moved from vehicle to vehicle.....

latest update works. spoken to talex about a few things and the user location is to be added soon as its not on the device at present and they will look at lowering the brightness of the leds at night via a future firmware. a few other things will be updated via a future firmware too.

here we go a photo of the inside, the chip is a sirif III chip (however its spelt).

Edited by smstext

Rest of the board looks like the same components visible, so probably a minor revision with newer CPU.

Can you read the model number off the larger black IC at the front, this looks like the voice chip.

Also can you get a pic of the top of the SiRFStar chip so I can see the model numbers etc as I have a theory here :)

Thanks

i will try another day, took 5 attempts to get a half decent photo. def have time next weekend to do it  i must admit the new unit does seem slightly quicker to pick up the satellites and work out change of direction too.

Gent's whilst I can see you have an interest in the construction of the new device please be mindful of the previous issues we've had and don't do/say anything that will put Briskoda into a difficult position with the manufacturer or other interested parties.

no probs stu, ive removed the image now, cheezmonkai has seen it and perhaps i should have just sent it by pm.

sorry.

Just to add I have just collected direct from the office in Orpington both the new Talex and the Laser detector. I have had so much trouble with the local post office found it safer to collect direct than wait and then find out items lost in post...

Still, first impression of the latest plastic box...

Still reflects a bit into the windscreen, so again used double sided tape and a reversed small bit off a old pair of trainers to provide anti reflective properties...

The other thing is the very bright blue led's , not happy with them at night time.. Think I will have to use some sort of coloured filter stuck on the front. Unless its possible to update the database to decrease the brightness.

Apart from that at this early time am happy with the performance. And at least now able to update and report to someone the

missings and new sites of money extraction points in our fair island.

the main thing i find annoying is the blue lights at night, i guess some thin electrical tape over the corners of the unit could take the brightness out a bit.

You could change them to a not super bright red or green easily as they are just going to be a couple of LED tagged on.

Just find the correct LED's and then somebody who can solder :)

The SiRFStar III is indeed quicker and more accurate than the SiRFStar II if configured in such a way as to use the features.

Hi, I'm new to the forum, arrived via putting Talex in google. Impressed by the knowledge displayed by the various contributors. I have had the 'old' unit since 6/12/05 and apart from the hiatus at the end of 07 when Novus systems were briefly involved, and the arrival of my broad band, I have been pleased with it, updating it numerous times without problems.

However that is not the case with their laser detector which I bought on 17/4/08 for £79. For some time I wondered how I would know if it was working as it never never alarmed other than during the power up process. On thursday 21/8 I noticed a mobile camera as I rounded a bend. The detector remained silent (it was on!). I duly received a speeding ticket some days after for the incident. I was somewhat annoyed on two counts. I contacted Talex, (Steve Morris) who said I should return it for testing. They received it by recorded delivery on 3/9/08.

Since then I've made many phone calls (engaged or ansaphone apart from getting through once in the early stages) and have e-mailed. No response at all, and I note there is no current active marketing for the lazer detector. I wonder if anyone locally can confirm if they are still in business. So, if you have one, do not assume it is working, and from my experience do not expect any help from Talex. I am still confused by the market place for these and similar units.

Whether yours was working or not - the consensus is that Radar detectors generally are a poor investment - you're usually nabbed by the time they fire off. This '3 seconds to scrub off your speed' is questionable, I understand?

I collected my new Talex from the office in Kent.. There were a few people in the office and I think a few more on site, so as far as I was aware the place does seem operational.

One thing does bother me a bit. I took advantage of the offer to accept the laser detector with the Talex at what appeared to be a good offer.

But so far have had no sounds from the unit apart from the initial startup.

I wonder how to check that it is in fact operational, and provides me with a bit of prior warning.

Has anyone got sound knowledge of checking out this unit..

Much appreciate any feedback..

Cheers to all Jake.

Hi there sorry to hear you have had a problem, has steve morris got back to you yet? i personally have had no problems, my new unit did develop a fault and was replaced the following day and since no faults. I have spoke to the other steve a couple times this week about a couple of cameras i have come across and i know they are still in business. I do also know mr morris is not always in the office. Would you like me to speak to them?

I personally have not got this device, but would try it out if one did come my way. however the problem with a laser beam is its targetted at your number plate and has up to 1m radius of it for scatter at huge distances. at distances of under 500m you looking at less than half a metre radius of the cone shape beam therefore virtually impossible for the unit to detect anything.

Have a look on ebay for a road angel number plate sensor and a road angel laser detector (they are quite rare now as they stopped making them) dont confuse it with a gps camera detector as the unit im telling you about is quite hard to come by (and looks like a radar detector) but is cheap on ebay. connect up to the number plate sensor and you will have a far better system.

If you have been caught it might be because not all work on laser, some will work on the time and distance system instead. but personally i think its because the device was to far up the dashboard and too close to the van in question, hope that answers both of your questions!!
