Engine mount woe's - Any Advice? :-(

Featured Replies

Hey,

I've been getting a knocking/juggling/rubbery noise when changing gear and going over bumps etc. in my 76k mile fabia vrs and was going to get a friend to help me do the silicone fix. We had a look today, but didn't in the end as it looks a bit fooked.

We put it in gear and dropped the handbrake. Rocking the car back and forth by hand the mount was clearly moving about 2 inches either way  Surely that isn't normal? My friend/ex mechanic seemed shocked it moved so much so easily. Starting the car with the bonnet up and the engine jumps about quite a bit too before settling, a lot more than other cars i've seen...

Does this happen often on fabias? Do all 3 need replacing? Any ideas on costs for this at the stealers?

As I say we didn't add the grease as surely that'll make it move about even more which can't be good!

Any advice appreciated. Calling dealers in the morning.

Sounds like at least one knackered mount to me. Hopefully someone who knows (Lummox?) will be along soon to confirm.

Doesnt sound good, probably the gearbox mount needs replacing.

Yeah thats the one that was moving really far and is positioned right where the noise seemed to be coming from, although it didn't make the noise when rocking. Not sure if its worth getting the rest replaced too...

Ive only seen the gearbox mountings go before, never the cambelt side.

Cool i'll start with just getting that done then I think. Do you know if the noise changing gear/going over lumps is most likely this mount?

Is the gearbox one the dogbone mount? If so its quite cheap and easy to replace

Im looking to replace mine now as im getting a clunking on gearchange- car has done 41k, I'm going to ask in the SEAT dealer for the Ibiza Cupra TDI one.

Nope the dog bone mount is the rear engine mount, which I think is the one thats more likely to go clunk when its on its way out.

Gearbox mount is underneath the battery/air cleaner and looks a bit crappy tbh

I'd consider replacing both. I've never seen the cambelt end one fail on any VW, but the other two (are there only 3 in total? I've never looked at Fabia mounts) are probably fair game.

now that you mention it, I had my cambelt changed 2 weeks ago and surely they need to take that off to get to the belt... hopefully they would of noticed and told me if it was shot.

Will call and ask prices. I'm just really hoping that this is whats causing the damn noise. It only does when dipping the clutch, going over pot holes and tapping the power on and off (so surely not links/arb/suspension). Don't hear it when turning fast or slow etc.

oh and pretty sure theres only 3 mounts... might be wrong though :D

Check the bolts- I'm sure Lummox has told a tale of woe about the bolts dropping out after a belt change- official procedure is to use new bolts.

Sounds like it then.
