vRS TDI Remap - Help

Featured Replies

I pick up my new Octavia vRS CR TDI on monday.

I have been thinking about having it remaped in the near future, and had a few questions I wondered if you guys could help me with.

i) If I have the engine remaped, is it crucial that I change the clutch / brakes at the same time? If so, what sort of money am I looking at to have this all done?

ii) I do a lot of miles 30K+ a year - how practical is having a remap? Will the ride remain the same. I dont want to gain more power, but then be uncomfortable driving it in all situations.

iii) What sort of increase in insurance has everyone noted when having this done?

Cheers all.

James

If you have a simple remap then you on't really need to consider the brakes or the clutch but you should be aware that you have extra power and drive accordingly.

The remap on the TDi will probably improve the MPG that you see.

Insurance is really based on your cicumstances.

Is it a good idea to get a few thousand miles on the clock before remaping? OR will it make no difference at all?

I'd wait a while so everything is bedded in nicely.

You could always go down the route of a switchable map if you're not sure on whether it will be a good idea for the mileage you do!

It makes little differance, I'd say get maybe 1k miles on just to check for any niggles.

On my PD170 it made a good saving of at least 1lt/100Km on trip computer and more performance. Besides the ride is way smoother. On the other end, I don't know for newer CR engines.

Got the car tuesday, and done 500 miles in it already - mostly Moterway however.

The engine is incredibly quiet and smooth for a diesel.

Loving it - its got a real punch. I have noticed, that you need to turn the ESP off to get the best out of it - feels like it holds it back too much with it on.

Looking for somewhere who is doing a remap on the CR - can only find PD at the mo. Any advice?

Well, I'd say definately go for it. I've the Astra mapped from 150hp/230lb-ft to what you see in my signature. It's a pleasure to drive in all situations, I guess you could call it "effortless". Power in an gear at pretty much any speed.

As for when, I'd wait till about 1000-1500 miles and do an oil change just before the map. An early oil change is a good plan, I find it helps the engine free up much quicker. Also make sure to do short intervals after the remap. I'm doing 10k interim oil changes between the 20k services on the Astra, using genuine filters and fully synthetic oil.

Personally I would wait a few thousand miles to let the engine bed in before you drive in such a way that would require a remap.

I know people say it's not necessary these days but speaking from personal experience, having owned a number of new cars, I am a great believer in running in.
