Exhaust - Welding

Featured Replies

Well couldnt post in tech help so thought this would be the next best place.

Was wondering if anyone has any tips on how to weld a stainless backbox to the stock exhaust system on the felicia (guessing is just normal mild steel) Now i know theres gonna be problems trying to weld the 2 so wondering if anyone got some good ideas

Thanks in advance!

*edit* the problem is welding the 2 metals btw in case u dont get what im chatting about :P

you could weld them together but it wouldn't be easy, it's beyond the skill of most welders to be honest...

first question what is the diameter of the two pieces you are joining?? is there a miss-match in size

If you have access to a TIG welder then it's easy enough with the right skills.

I would used a stainless filler rod and keep the heat down to a minimum. Mig is possible but to get the right amount of penitration and control is easier rather than controling the weld pool and getting a feel for the metal as you go along.

Hope thats not too technical, welding looks easy but is a bit of an art form and take practice to do right.

Havnt had the chance to look, i pretty much bought it off the shelf. Been raining ALL day today so havnt been able to get under and check it out. Im not much of a welder so i guess it will have to be a specialist job :thumbdwn: Was worth a try anyway

Ill let you know what happens anyways and maybe get some piccys of it  why not eh:cool::D

Can you not just sleeve it?

As above /\

i was thinking sleeve's or reducers or both

:+1: - When I read "welding an exhaust" I thought "repair work, stainless -> TIG". I'd expect a stainless box that was designed for the car to just slip on at the designed joint on the mild system, and the most I'd expect to need if the box was designed for a "sports system" on a Felly would be an expander.

yeah sleeve or reducer.....

If it's one of those universal backboxes, I'd take it back. Not only will it not fit properly it will bugger up the backpressure.

One of the less well documented functions of an EMS is that it compensates for changes in back pressure.

back pressure:rofl:

this is no adjustment for back pressure as such, but the ecu will make sight adjustments based on the lambda reading, but to be honest fitting a 'special' back box wont make any difference because it's too far away from the engine

You might laugh Tom, but I've driven an oldish carbie TU car that was very sensitive to drops in back pressure caused by holes in the exhaust, and a newer SPi one that didn't notice beyond the increase in exhaust noise when the system broke at the cat outlet!

Note im not going for performance  Just looks  and sound

Also, first time ive ever fitted a performance air filter too, gotta say im super pleased with it. Really big difference in my throttle response. Cost me £50 from P&B Motorsport (Local) makes a great sound too.

Non-Freedom advertising.

if you show some pictures of it with a tape measure next to it it would be handy so i can get an idea of exactly how big it is....

the real problem lies with the clearance between the rear trailing arm and the spare wheel recess in the boot that protrudes down,

No worries, but i will have to do it a bit later on if thats ok? What bits did you want measured?

Usual dimensions for "loose boxes" are length, diameter, and outlet diameters (or tailpipe length for a back box).

"Pay £12 and advertise as much as you like for a year" - this is cheap certainly, and I'm not claiming otherwise, but it's a new definition of "free", one with which I have not previously been acquainted!!

Freedom i think means 'free to do what you want on the forum'.. (within reason).

So ad's arnt free... but you are free to advertise.
