Bad name

Featured Replies

Why and when did Skoda get such a bad name!!!!

never found the answer?

TV comedians making jokes and the ignorance of the British TV viewer.

Skodas back in the day were a bit agricultural compared to western cars, and cheap too, so they became the target of mickey-taking by people without any better knowledge: they were cheap, reliable, transport.

It was badge snobbery too- that still exists.

Skoda used to be a top name, in the time of the Iron Curtain their technology and innovation was suppresed and knocked back in favour of home products by their political masters, who couldn't see a Cz product being better than that from the Motherland. This in turn lead them to being lumped with the likes of Lada, Trabant etc, especially in the eyes of the west.

As above really. The rear engined ones were a bit crude and poorly built with varying panel gaps, orange peel paint etc, but I dont think it was that that caused the jokes, it was the price - they were cheap, so people took the mick.In Britain, people are so shallow and image conscious that they thought the jokes were funny. The rest of the World didn't laugh though, and it was only the UK that had a problem with Skodas.

Its a bit like kids attitudes to trainers etc - if they dont have sadidas or reeplok written on them, they laugh at them and call them cr4p.

I've not actually heard anybody make a joke about a Skoda car in a few years, have to admit I did chuckle at them when I was at school though

Probably because in the early/mid eighties it was one of (if not the) cheapest new cars you could buy - not much over £2000 if my memory serves me. Yugo - Lada - Skoda, used to be all on a par!

Used to laugh at Ladas but not Skodas

Someone in my old school, his parents had a Favorit Estate or van where the windows were panelled over. no-one laughed or took the mick.

It certainly was/is.

Sadly it's all too common on this site as well.

Yeah badge snobbery exists.

(In the manner of Sheriff Justice from Smokey and the Bandit)

There's no way, no way I'd ever drive a Skoda.... :D

I had a skoda Estelle it was crap, won,t bore you all with detail,s, but in that era there was a lot of rubbish cars being produced and it is strange why the poor little Estelle was picked on so mercilessly.lada got treated the same but in fact the riva which was a fiat 127 was a very good car made to handle Russian pot holes etc. If you watch" long way round" the Riva is still chugging around Eastern Europe

Traffic news: a crash has occured on the M25 a Car transporter has jack-knifed it was carrying new skodas so police say it will take ages to clear up all the marzipan and iceing sugar......
