Eee XP'd

Featured Replies

I got an Asus EeePC 900 from Play.com a while back. It was part of the great Play F**k up whereby I ordered a 16GB Windows XP version, and actually ended up with a 20GB Linux version.

So thinking it would be easy to install XP, I kept it. A few months later, after deciding that linux wasn't really all that bad, I decided to get rid of it anyway and install XP. I originally wanted to do it with a USB flash drive, and increase the storage capacity of the Eee at the same time, however, the prices of 8GB Hi speed flash drives were about £35 to £40, so I chose to buy one of these instead, as it will help with any future installations

It cost £55 delivered.

I managed to Nlite a copy of windows XP using this guide (much awesomeness)

And Bob's your mother's brother, it's worked! Now for some advanced messing aboot....

Thanks for the second link. Can still speed up my Eee a bit.

I did exactly the same, bought a 20Gb Linux 900 (on purpose, wanted the 20Gb instead of the smaller one) and also bought the same (re)writer (lying in a corner of my room now).

I installed a copy of XP Pro (which I still had lying around (legal)), but encountered a couple of problems.

Had to put all the extras and temporary stuff on the D disc. The A disc is a little bit small for a complete installation incl all the updates.

I smiled as it had its first startup and the win chime sounded, as a kid that grew up to an adult :D.

It is my excellent VCDS-toy

Yes, It's very satisfying seeing it boot into Windows for the first time. I did punch the air, and there may have been a small amount of whooping.

Lol! glad to see your gettin the hang of it...

Nlite is a good tool to make a very fast and slick xp install

I like that Nlite as well saves time by embedding sata drivers into XP installs

Is it possible to install an iso of xp on one of these across a network? Instead of the external drive option>?

I've not heard of this method being done, as you have to have some sort of bootable device connected to a USB port.

It's possible to install XP from a hi speed USB flash memory drive plugged into a USB port, although it's a little bit more messing about than using an optical drive.

Yes , think ill give the usb method in conjunction with Nlite a whirl
