I've lost my lovely smoke!!!

Featured Replies

Initial runs this pm with the water injection kit - car behaves as though it's about 20 deg C (ambient this pm is an indicated 40 deg C).

The lovely smoke that used to upset people behind me is gone, replaced by a thin whiteish smoke trail. Kinda upset tbh

Acceleration is uber-smooth and there is deffo more go. Currently awaiting some alcohol to try out in a 20% mix.....

This is a mod that I should have known about from the very start. And the Devils Own progessive controller kit is truly excellent....

Cheers

Bas

Good stuff but i am sure you will find a way of getting the smoke back

Having the same experiences with the Snow Performance kit I have too. Now running a rough 40% methanol mix (very coarse mix measuring ;)) and it's nice for sure. Just waiting on some proper testing, which is most likely going to involve a run on a dyno dynamics rolling road in Plymouth on 20th September. :D

i mate of mine is running methanol/water injection on his petrol turbo. really does work a charm according to him. he went to castle combe this weekend past and ripped it up all day long without a problem :)

This has to be the mod of the century tbh - running only water - it's really worth it.

I've been advised to try a small nozzle pre-turbo but uncomfortable at possible turbo blade damage, as unlikely as it may be.....

Now where's that alcohol?......

I currently suffer from HUGE amounts of black smoke from my TD2 (sounds like the same amount as you once had) I would like more power, and less smoke.. does this fit the bill? any more info? fitting? price?

You mention the chance of turbo blade damage? Why? How?

Cheers in advance Basil :)

If you really want to disappear in a cloud of smoke I believe in some tanks they spray fuel onto the exhaust which then creates huge clouds of smoke to hide said tank.

Obviously there may be a few safety issues with doing this in a fabia but I'm sure you can mod your way around them:D

Also you won't be able to see how upset the people behind you are either...

I didn't have huge amounts of smoke tbh. I was being a bit dramatic . My map tune is by Richard Washbrook at oscarli.com. My good mate Dave (Shifty) had a tune recently by Rich after a well-known company tried to tune his uprated injector setup - results of Rich's map= far less smoke and far more power.

In addition to all the "standard" benefits - more power, better mpg, etc there are some really nice things that WI does:

-act like a Gigantic FMIC "on demand" - you floor it and temps actually go down (EGT's by 200 deg IIRC and air intake by 12 deg C below ambient according to some reports)

-cools the intake charge down, = more oxygen and allows more complete combustion of derv = less smoke, more power...

- makes a smaller turbo think its bigger - typically by installing a smaller nozzle pre-turbo in addition to the one post-intercooler. The denser cooler air spins up the turbo faster and flows more oxygen..

About pre-turbo installs - there is some argument on the effect of water droplets hitting the turbo blades at high rpm causing premature wear. The thing is that the Devil's own nozzles spray droplets at the micron level so its not like a regular drop of water smashing into the turbo blades. Not an issue with post- IC installs - you actually steam clean your engine from the inside, lol.

Of all the kits - the devils own one is one of the cheapest.

The owner posts on several site and seems a very genuine person, providing a great product at a good price. Despite the price, the components seem to be very good quality IMHO... The kit has all the connectors, wires, fuses, wire taps, etc needed as well as 2 nozzles. The progressive controller allows you to use a bigger nozzle and adjust when and how quickly it comes on..

You can order off their US site, and there is a UK authorised supplier on the above forum called bruce-m.. [email protected]

kit I got: VW Progressive kit DevilsOwn Injection

I hasten to add that I have no connection with the company, just I'm a very satisfied customer and I like to pass on useful info on to mates..

PS I'm running 15% ethanol + distilled water now and can feel the power has gone up even more....intend to work my way up to 40% stepwise :D

Bas sent me the link so thought i'd pop on here and register, Glad you happy with your kit BAS and as i said keep us posted on results.

If anyones got any questions don't hesitate to ask me.

All the kits come standard as post intercooler injection or if you don't have a intercooler then post turbo is fine.

As for the pre turbo injection that comes as an upgrade, although there is a lot of worry about it, i've got various customers that have been running it for over a year now (myself included) and there has been no problems at all.

Bas runs are full progressive kit, but there is also the cheaper boost activated Base kit which is probably are most popular kit.

Is boost not progressive, in that more boost = more injection? :) That's how my kit works. Cuts in @ about 0.6 bar and set for full injection at around 1.8 bar.

Basil - What power did you have before this setup? Once you have tweaked it, what power do you hope to have? Have you used the existing bottle, or got another?

Mine smokes bad! So hoping this atleast takes off most off it, maybe the Forge FMIC isnt up to the job?

No, Boost kits work by when boost hits a certain point the kit cuts in flat out spraying the Water/methanol.

Progressive kits work by reading a voltage signal from something like a Maf, RPM or Map sensor so the progressive reads this and controls the amount of water/methanol injected, so if say using a Map sensor you could injected 20% at say 12psi, 50% @15psi 75%@ 18psi etc etc

It allows for much more precise tuning to create a more linear power supply.

The boost kits are still a very good set up, the trick is to set the boost activation close to peak boost pressure, its the kit i run on mine car.

Dunno about the power mate - single dyno here in Bahrain, and the guy can't figure how to measure a diesel on it :thumbdwn:

Dave's (shifty) car has slightly larger injectors than mine and dyno'ed at over 250 bhp..Identical map.

Seat of the pants - power is deffo up with running only 15% ethanol. I like :)

The Forge FMIC is amazing - I don't get heatsoak even running at 50 deg C ambient temps before WI. Still with ambient temps that high, the power drops off. No longer :D

Using the 5l larger OEM washer tank, epoxied in the DO tank fitting to the cut-off end of the OEM pump and it plugged in where the headlight washer pump usually goes.

VAG 1.9PD install pics - Devilsown Methanol Alcohol Water Injection

Suggest you get in touch with Rich Washbrook (oscarli.com). I have met him and had some chats with him, and he is a genius at tuning the 1.9PD.

Have compared the performance of his maps with those from a couple of leading UK tuners - on my car, and he is in a league of his own. That good.

Dave seems to think so too :D:

Sure WI would help cut down the on-boost smoke.

Very interesting :rubchin:

So I could run this with my existing screenwash tank (5L already as I have xenons) and spray the mixture at post-intercooler stage?

Would engine map adjustment be essential after this kit was fitted? Or would it just result in a reduction in smoke, while still using my existing map?

Yep thats it.:D

Steve

Nope a map adjustment isn't essential, you would just get a redustion in smoke while using the existing map, although a map adjustment would release even more power again.

Hmmm......BRISKODA discount?? lol

Could be interested in this. How much is the base kit?

You have PM.

hmmm......briskoda discount?? Lol

:+1:

Cheers Devilsown........looks like you could have a few more interested lol

Mine is definitely progressive else it wouldn't have a "max-flow" boost setting on the controller, it would merely have a "cut-in" boost pressure. I've tested it and it's definitely a "dribble" early on, and then a full on gusher at 2 bar odd. :D

Nothing like a full on gusher to get you goin, eh Jas lol lol

So, have we got a ballpark figure for a UK price for the Devil's progressive kit? My primary aim is smoke reduction; any extra go is a bonus :)

Cheers,

Steve

Steve,

Devilsown PM'd me and for the basic kit its £189 delivered with £10 off for us BRISKY folks......

OK, interesting. So that brings it down to £179 delivered for us? Is that sent from within the UK, or might we get hit with import charges? And is this the progressive kit?

Cheers,

Steve

I'm happy to chip in for Wardy's kit then I can see where I am driving in Manchester again
