How long can the 1.3 be left without being run?

Featured Replies

I have left my car unused for an extended period while I sort out the brakes. Been finding after sorting one fault, there's another to sort. Also been quite busy with other things (will have all the time I want from start of October). I was wondering how long it could remain stood still without the engine being run.

Nothing stopping me putting the battery back in and starting it up but one thing and another and I think it's been left 3 months now :o

Not an expert on these engines & others will probably advise better.

I would thought it probably Ok but if your worried take the plugs out & crank it a few times to get some oil round before starting it. Its what we always used to do with rebuilds

don't worry about it, it will be fine, and dont crank it with the spark plugs removed, just unplug the crank sensor

Makes sense but why shouldnt you crank it with the plugs out ?

you might get a face full of petrol

I think a bit might come out, biggest danger would probably be it igniting so your advice best taken

We always did it to stop excess mixture laying on the plugs & flooding it making subsequent starting harder. I will ad Im hawking back to Bikes in the 70's. I guess if it floods you can always take the plugs out & wipe them

with the crank sensor unplugged the injectors won't fire

Makes sense, bikes had carbs in those days

Ive had them at 3 years and never being turned over and they always ran fine with no problems. I nver bothered taking the plugs out, or crankcase sensors. I once had a 130 Estelle that hadnt been run in 12 years. I got it to run within 5 mins, but it knocked too loudly. The bearings let go years ago. Still ran alright though and didnt even smoke, just loud.

I took my 1992 Favorit Estate "off the road" in 2001. Used various parts as spares for a 1996 edition.

When a colleague eventually removed the old car for scrapping we simply connected a decent battery, put about a pint of fuel in the tank, primed the carb (manual priming lever on that one) and turned the key.

The old girl fired up on all four cylinders within seconds, so we drove it onto the recovery vehicle.

A fitting end to a great old car!
