Red Oil Warning Light

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

I am sure this has been covered before but i feel my car is a special case or REDOILWARNINGLIGHT-itus. The background of the car is that the previous owner got a metal bar stuck in the oil sump which obviously emptied it of oil, the car was not moved (except on the back of a truck) from when this happened to when skoda fitted a new one. The insurance company wrote the car off and i got myself a rather good deal.

Now for the down side, for approx the last 2000 miles the red oil warning light keeps coming on intermitantly when the car has been on a bit of a journey. The most it has come on is 3 times and that was in 3 and a half hous of driving from Bournemouth to North Devon. I have had the oil pressure switch changed and the garage also advised before having this done the pressure was fine.

I have booked it into the garage again next Wednesday to be checked out as the problem obviously needs sorting as it is kind of a worry, plus when i got in it the other day and started it from cold the engine made the car bunny hop down the road as it seemed it didnt want to kick in properly with any power. This only happened while the car got going and once it had been going it was fine.

Any advice before i go to the garage next week would be a massive help.

Thanks

Rikki

Sorry forgot to say the problem is on an Octavia vRS mk1 :)

bunny hop thing is unrelated i think you'll find. it's just a result of the cold start-up cycle on the vRS making it a bit lumpy for the 1st couple of mins. nothing abnormal. lots of threads about the secondary airpump on here. just for the record, on cold starts the VVT and secondary air system will be operating to warm the cat up.

from what you've said, i'd be tempted to remove the sump and fit a new oil pump. maybe the pump got damaged when the sump did. as you obviously know, the oil system is kinda important so i wouldnt think twice about spending a bit of extra cash on getting it sorted.

silly question maybe, but have you checked the oil level?

Good luck with getting it fixed mate, and let us know how you get on....

Yep, you should really just let it idle for a minute or two before pulling away or it'll judder like anything. When the revs drop to just under 1000rpm it's ready to pull away.

Thanks for the reply and advice Bodge. The oil level is fine to my limited knowledge, done the usual take the dipstick out wipe it then test the level, it was between the notches on the dipstick.

Oil level's fine then. However, if the pickup or oil pump were damaged by the rod through the sump that does not mean that the oil pressure is fine.
