servicing - maindealer or local specialist??

Featured Replies

coming up for the first service on the vRS tdi next week and every part of me says to take it to JKM rather than the local maindealer!! the JKM service stamp says skoda specialist on it!

what do you all suggest JKM or main dealer??

I think I'll move this out of the Superb II section for you

This is a great question! just about to be in the same situation. My local VAG garage which have used and know is good or keep that main dealer service history?

I'm thinking local but keen to see what everyone else thinks.

DOH!! Thanks Mate! That's what a 5 week old baby does for you! I can't even read things properly now! 5 whole weeks of interupted nights sleep!!!

That reminds me I really must give you a call and arrange a time to drop over and sort out that vag-com stuff, if the offer still stands that is?!

Had the timing belt changed on my Octy II today (1.9 PD 105 - "ish" ..... Derv Doctor Phase 1 Remap!!).

Very satisfied with the service at DSB Autocare, Bulwell, Nottingham - great people, very friendly and efficient + competitive price.

Work done:- New timing belt + tensioner; water pump; change brake fluid.

Cost £301.

I'm satisfied!

Thanks for that mate. Nottingham is a bit far for me to travel though! I'm more thinking about the resale issues if there is no maindealer service history. Personally if I was buying a car and it was serviced by JKM for its whole life I would be more than happy, but wondering what peoples experiances were on this matter.

I dont think that main dealer servicing is worth anything really

Most people have the thought that if it has been serviced at the same place for the whole of the cars life then they know that garage know`s the car inside out

We have quite a few calls from people who have just bought cars and want to know its history etc. and we do pass on that information

I dont think dealers are as forward as others at passing on information about that

At least on here , you can ask and others have used specialists and then you can get a bit more background information from specialists

My dealer is cheaper than the local specialist for servicing, so its a no brainer for me. At least from a dealer you will get any software updates or workshop campaign work completed during your service that the local specialist will not have access to. In the long run, especially as the car runs out of warranty a full dealer history is more likely to yield goodwill payments from skoda uk should an issue arise.

My favourite dealer is a good 15% cheaper than JKM and the local dealer is about 5% cheaper too. That plus I get a stamp in the book, which to Joe Public probably does add some value on resale.

If it didn't dealers wouldn't advertise "full main dealer service history" as a selling point.

As Manny has already mentioned if you have a full dealer service history Skoda tend to look more favourably on contributions towards issues just outside of warranty.

Changes to the EU block exemption may mean you have to use the main dealer and their parts if you want to be covered by their warranty. IIRC under the new rules, manufacturers won't be required to disclose technical information outside of their dealer network.

But EU competition laws mean they will if they don't want investigating.

Ah, EU law and its many contradictions...

Ah, EU law and its many contradictions...

Not really...one law says that manufacturers have to share their part details. The other law governs anti-competitive behaviour. So rather than being contradictory these laws both achieve the same thing, hence one of them being dropped (though this is due for 2010, so it doesn't make any difference now).
