Nylon engine mounts??

Featured Replies

ok, i've been thinking about using nylon to make a rear engine mount for my felicia becuase the rubber one isn't up to the job and polyurethane is an **** to work with...

what does everybody think?? too much vibration?? too hard??

i've seen nylon used to make track control arm bushes in the past, but never on an engine mounting

Nylon is a comparitively low melting point material, isn't it?

No way you can use the Golf rubber to a fabricated chassis-side bracket?

i've just been looking at some of the universal mountings that powerflex have to offer, i might be able to fabricate something that will fit those rather than trying to make a bush that fits the existing mounting

Geeky comment of the day... about 218 DegC (Melting DecompositionTemp.)

well, there's nothing down there that will get to 218 celcius, except maybe the exhaust

I try, I try! ;)

Seriously, I've never heard of nylon being used for bushes like these, and I'd think there's more reason for it than just potential harshness.

Tell you what might be a problem using nylon anywhere near the exhaust or other hot components.

Nylon's a thermoplastic not a thermosetting plastic.

Depending on the Nylon the melting point can be from just under 200 degrees Centigrade to around 350 degrees.

So get nylon warm and it will start to go soft and reshape.

As such if it got warm the mount would deform a bit. If you got it warm enough then pressure of the engine on the hot mount would reshape it to a flat blob of nothing useful.
