new brakes, squeeking.

Featured Replies

Got new discs and pads fitted allround on my Octy Mk1 Vrs about 2k miles ago and there still squeeking and binding. When the pads got fitted they were basically touching the disc, but i thought if i left them to bed it they would wear enough to not touch all the time. But now its doing my head in, should i live with it or can the disc be tightened on further or something?

Thanks in advance.

James.

genuine or spurious parts ?

some spurious pads can be made of materials which are more susceptable to squeaking , i.e. more brass in the compound

or can be a slightly different shape , i.e. no chamfer on the pad edges

or if you took it too easy whilst bedding the brakes in you could of glazed the pads

I got them from Skoda. Think they are chamfered aswell. Maybe i should do a few emergency stops?

Was copper grease applied when fitting?

Im not sure, i watched the guy do it aswell. It had a service done aswell and he normally greases everything up but just cant remember.

The pads usually have shims on the back of the pads to reduce sqealing, but try this

- About 10 stops from 60/70 down to about 10mph without actually stopping in succession - A drive to let it cool then repeat it once more

- A decent drive to let it cool and then try the brakes as you would under normal use.

Had the exact same problem ,esp when reversing ,got pads from main dealer and it seems standard octavia pads not suitable for vrs model ,got sorted on return and no prob since

Mine only really does it when reversing also. Just took car for a spin and a few hard brakes, pulled up entered reverse and squeak, this time louder, then it stopped. Ive just looked at receipt and it only states brake lining, no specific type, but they were about £32 before VAT each.

I bought them from skoda but took it to a mechanic i know to fit them.

Not sure what i should do now.

Is it a a squealling noise or more of a mooing sound?

ive got a squeal when reversing.

i used to have a moo, then replaced rear discs and pads, now i have a squeal!

it's a good reversing warning for pedestrians, but drives dogs mad!

I think I just need new shims in the rear calipers

A squeal would suggest shims or some Copaslip for sure.

I spoke to the guy who fitted the brakes and assured me he used copperslip (i thought he did i just double checked). Is there any visual differences between normal octavia pads and Vrs ones tht i can check?

Also does anyone have a rough guess how much shims cos from skoda.

Thanks.

there are small bits of plastic only paper thick that are already on the back of the pads when you get them.

You don't buy them and if they were taken off you'd need to either find a way of putting something similar on or a similar antisqueal spray on the pad back.

I think mcgyver had squeaking brakes after them being changed on a mk2, maybe a pad issue. I know on the mk1 after mine were replaced when reversing it used to sound like a bus.
