Stereo bits-Help!

Featured Replies

Hi

My Fabia has the Symphony single-slot CD player, and I'm getting a bit fed up of having discs rattling about in the glovebox!

Ideally, I'd like to have my iPod connected to the stereo (not one of those junk transmitters) and hidden in the drawer under the stereo. Is this possible?

Also, my mate has a JVC KD AVX-2 DVD player. Assuming the iPod-in-the-drawer trick will work and operate in conjuction with this, are there any DVD players which fit in the fabia and don't look odd, i.e protrude?

And, (finally), what costs am I looking at to go down these routes?

Thanks

Ipod connection is under the stereo, could be relocated to the glove box.

Kenwood KDC-W6541U Can be bought now for £110, I paid £199.99

Kenwood KVT-627DVD. You can pick up this model for around £250 now, of the newer model for around £400.

Ipod lead runs into the glovebox.

If your changing the HU and you want as little protrusion as possible the you REALLY have to buy the Skoda piece of trim for below the buttons because it doesn't use a collar around the HU front to locate, and lets you push the stereo 3 - 5mm further in.. Doesn't sound much but makes a difference.. and the trim fits better.

I've used both and when I switched to the Skoda part the stereo went in and located so much better!

Plus, I Think, the Skoda part is £3ish Vs. autoleads £5ish. It exists as it's the part that's used when skoda put a factory sat nav in that's 2 Units high.

I had a kenwood unit running the iPod control box.. but since I changed Fabia I've not been so bothered .. Connects2 make a little box that'll let you control the ipod from the stereo buttons but I'm not sure it displays anything like the kenwoods will..

Interesting...thanks for the input and pictures. I presume the Skoda trim piece is a dealer-stocked part then? I'll go for it, I don't want anything sticking out slightly for the sake of a few quid.

I'd prefer one of the DVD players that didn't have the big flip-up screen (I just view it as something fiddly to go wrong, but that's just me...), just the small integrated display, but it's the iPod interface that intrigues me.

I think I may have a plan now though. Had a closer look at my mates JVC head unit today, and he has the iPod hidden away in a cubby in the centre console, with the cable routed under the console itself. The iPod controls on the HU are quite impressive, and I think the HU itself would blend in nicely with the dark dash of my Fabia.

So...JVC HU, Skoda trim piece, iPod routed into the drawer below the HU, sort out my dodgy aerial and I'll be well chuffed.

P.S. Will I need to add a signal booster to the back of the HU?

Well, I never did when I ran my Kenwood HU and it got OK reception... however, I lived in west London at the time and now Middlesex.. but never noticed it loosing reception visiting people in nottingham or Rochdale (north of Manchester)

My Kenwood was good for iPod control, but you could only skip tracks / playlists. Track or Artist titles display was nice. However.. I couldn't navigate to a track directly.. i.e. "Artists - album - track" I think the current generation of HU's can though.. some of them at least.

Dunno if the trim bit is a dealer stocked part.. got mine of eBay for a few quid but have seen somewhere on here it's not an expensive part.... it's knocking around my living room with the old stereo and iPod box.. If i remember I'll see if it's got a Part number on it and post back.

That'd be great, ta!

OK, the numbers on the back of the strip read:-

6Y0 857 231 046159 3 2061

I'd take a guess it was the first bit, "6Y0 857 231" as I've seen other part numbers with the 6Y0 code at the start.

Oh, one last thing. If you plan to fit a sliding drawer below the radio like you'll find in an elegance spec Fabia, just be aware that it'll take allot of mucking about with cables and cage tabs before you get it to slide freely.. Mine was never 100% with the kenwood above it.. never worked out why but guess the kenwood put more weight top of the drawer for support than the original stereo did.. I've put the sliding draw in my vRS since, with the Factory CD and low and behold it slides smooth again ;)

EDIT: DOH! I just read your sig.. you've got an elegance.. be prepared to fiddle! If your stereo's deep enough (and also, not too deep) fit the rubber stump thing at the back so it uses the back of the cage for support.. Mine was too shallow.

Most garages will have the trim bit in stock and it costs less than £2.50
