upgrading headlights

Featured Replies

HI

I want to upgrade my headlights to xenon`s.I`ve found a website on ebay that sells the kit(ebay member name is JAM performance UK)£50+£10 postage.

THe kit includes this

  • 1 HID XENON CONVERSION KIT:

  • 2 HID XENON SINGLE BEAM BULBS (SIZE/COLOUR OF YOUR CHOICE)

  • 2 BALLASTS

  • CABLE TIES AND FIXINGS

  • EXCELLENT ENGLISH INSTRUCTIONS

  • FULL AFTERSERVICE OFFERED

  • EMIT ALMOST 5 TIMES MORE LIGHT THAN HALOGEN

  • LAST 10 TIMES LONGER COMPARED TO HALOGEN

  • MASSIVE GAINS OVER STANDARD LIGHTING AND HUGE IMPROVEMENTS!

Has anybody done this conversion with the headlamps ?

There are some real problems with this. When they are fitted at factory, By law, they must have 1. Lense cleaning system (headlight washers) 2. They must be self leveling.

This will more than likely cause problems at the MOT time.

Non "zenon" cars do not have the self levling sytem, or the correct projector lenses. These too could melt causing more problems.

Even if the lights were fitted you will have problems of dazzling everyone else on the road, and in turn they will dazzle you back in revenge!

Also your considoring paying 50 quid for something alot lot more expensive, and as they say you pay for what you get. They will be rubbish.

Hope this helps.

As posted above - fitting aftermarket HIDs is illegal.

Now you would probably be fine.

Like many others you could install the kit, never have a problem and all will be well.

Alternatively your car could fail its MOT and be off the road until you put the original lights back.

This link will be of interest to you:

Department for Transport - Aftermarket HID (Xenon) headlamps

And the bit that most interests you:

Therefore a HID headlamp unit sold in the after market should:

1. be type approved to ECE Regulation 98 as a component.

2. when fitted to the vehicle should enable ECE Regulation 48 to be complied with (although no government inspection will take place).

3. Comply with RVLR as far as "use" is concerned.

In practice this means:

1. The headlamp unit (outer lens, reflector, bulb) shall be type approved to ECE 98 and be "e-marked" to demonstrate this. That can only be done by the headlamp supplier - Hella, Valeo etc. who must test the headlamp in an independent laboratory.

2. Once fitted to the vehicle it must have headlamp cleaning and self-levelling (which can be for the headlamp or can be in the vehicle suspension - some expensive estate cars have "self-levelling suspension" and that is adequate). Also the dipped beam must stay on with the main beam.

3. The headlamp must be maintained in good working order, kept clean, and aligned/adjusted correctly like any other headlamp.

Under the Road Traffic Act 1988 it is an offence to supply, fit or use vehicle parts which are not legal.

In summary it is not permitted to convert an existing halogen headlamp unit for use with HID bulbs. The entire headlamp unit must be replaced with one designed and approved for use with HID bulbs and it must be installed in accordance with the rules stated above.

Without washers your kit is effectively illegal.

I've done it mate but not using that kit the only one that i can guarantee works properly is from HIDS4U.co.uk

Have a look at this thread as i included pics

Carl:thumbup:

You installed washers too?

No but as i said in the thread ill strap a mate to the front with a bucket and sponge to keep them clean

Carl:thumbup:

or the correct projector lenses. These too could melt causing more problems.

HIDs are more efficient than halogen and run cooler so there won't be any melting. 35w against 55w.:)

Dont matter if they are projector lenses or reflectors (cars with standard xenons have them both) they are STILL illegal.

The Hids4u kit, although a good kit is STILL ILLEGAL.

So, just to recap, for any uncertainty............any aftermarket HID kit; in any lens; in any car is ILLEGAL unless you get the genuine headlamp units and the HID designed for that headlamp unit.

The projector lenses for the Octy Halogens is different to those for Octy with Xenons so a HID kit in the former is illegal as the headlamp is only type approved for FILIMENT type (halogen) bulbs.

I have had a HID kit fitted and took it out, not worth the hassle and the feeling that every oncoming motorist will be calling you a **** as they get dazzled at night.

Steve

Just use legal more powerful bulbs, could someone suggest some as one of mine went last night I still have standard ones at the mo, halfords in town

I still rate the Osram Nightbreakers.

I installed these for dipped and main (along with some chrome indicators so you can't see any orange at the front (or rear for that matter)).

The light is certainly whiter than standard Halogens and according to the claim by Osram they throw as much light on the road as is legally allowed - I'm certainly impressed with them.

Osram:

- night breakers

- All weather +30%

- Silverstars

Phillips:

- extreme

- Vision plus

- GT150 nightvision

The halfords own 80% brighter and 50% brighter ones are not bad either if they are on buy one get one free.

Best value are IMHO the osrams, esp when they are £15-£19 a pair.
