Gear change issue - R,1,3,5

Featured Replies

Hi All,

All of a sudden am facing difficulty in changing gears in my RS. I can slot into 2nd and 4th as usual. However am not able to change to 1,3,5 and R. With some force I can put it in 1st and move the vehicle. However it does not slot in fully.

The only change is that today I upgraded my audio system. So the audio guy had to remove the HU and did the wiring. Is there any connection to this and the gear change issue?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Ram

sounds like it could be something to do with the linkage, try having a look under the gaiter round the gear lever and under the bonnet, I think there are two cables which go to the gearbox. I suppose the guy fitting the radio could have dropped something that founds its way to the area under the gearstick but would be a bit weird.

i had similar problem on vectra after running over some debris on a dual carriage way and it turned out to be something wedged under bonet between pipe and gear linkage.

so worth a check

Another possibility is the guy lent on the gear lever and led to the linkage cables straining the locking collars at the gearbox end when he was upgrading the audio system. Won't be the first time or the last.

Hi All

Thanks to everyone for your help.

Turned out that the problem was something else. When I opened the bonnet for a checking, found the small flexible tube that runs from the airfilter box to the front of the engine was hanging out from the airfilter box. I connected that tube to the air filter box. I dont know if it has anything to do with gear change. Out of curiosity started the engine and gear shift was smooth again. Lucky me :)

Now, Is that tube the secondary air flow sensor? What is the connection between it and gear change? Or did I accidentally touch somewhere?

Thanks

Ram

That sounds like secondary hose from the air filter housing was your problem. It has caused gear selection issues for other people on here in the past. I don't quite know what the pipe does (I have a diesel anyway), buut I suspect the end of the pipe was partly blocking some of the linkage and thus you could not select R, 1, 3 and 5th.

that hose is just the intake hose for the secondary air pump, the only way it could effect your gearchange is that if it dangled down and jammed the shift linkage.

pretty random! can you see any damage on the hose where it could have been squashed by the linkage?

I don't think this is the first time I've heard of this happening tbh.

Glad your sorted though.

Exactly what happened to mine ,lost 3 and 5 ,just after the car had been serviced and the air filter changed

Hi Bodge,

I didnt notice any visible damage to the hose. May be I will have another look for any damages.

BTW, to make sure it didnt create any issues I did a scan and found fault code "17705 - Drop in pressure between turbo and throttle valve (Check D.V!)". Tried recreating the issue by accelarating past 3000 RPM. VAG_COM didnt capture any fault code. So I assume 17705 is related to the seconday hose hanging out from airfilter box. Or is it something else?

Thanks

Ram

Ahh the dreaded 17705! Could be lots of things I'm afraid.

If the code does ever come back, just do a search on here for "17705", and you'll open a whole can of worms on what it could be.

I had it for about six months, with minor and rare symptoms of reduced boost. Turned out the T.B. needed a good clean. The fault code is nothing to lose sleep over though, it's never an expensive or critical problem. Normally a leaky hose or broken valve, or in my case a dirt throttle body.

Glad your gears are all working now though....

Thanks a lot for your inputs.

I will keep an eye on that 17705 :)

  • 1 year later...

Just discovered my gearchange issues were also being caused by a breather hose dangling into linkage, after reading this thread - 1st, 3rd and 5th moves gearbox lever counter weight towards engine block, intermitently trapping in-line filter, preventing selection.

Hose tie-wrapped out of the way - sorted.

Have a similar issue but mine is intermittent. Car will run fine and then clutch pedal will not come back up from floor and no gears can be selected :-( engine off all gears are avaialble but engine running all gears are jammed.... manually lifting the pedal up will cure the fault for 1500 miles or so.. any thoughts?

Had one idea of sticky slave cylinder? was said to be a common fault but I can't find any refrences to it!
