variable boot floor

Featured Replies

anyone ordering one of these ? are they any good or are they a gimmick whereby the novelty will wear off after a month ?

The only real benefit here is if you are lifting heavy things in and out of the boot on a regular basis. The raised boot floor means you don't have to lower it down so far when putting stuff in and getting stuff out.

I didn't bother with it in my Octy vRS estate, but I do have it now in my loaner Octy L+K. Quite honestly, I could easily live without it. In the estate, I find it a pain in the backside, as it severely reduces the depth of the boot, and actually stopped me fitting a new barbecue we'd bought into the boot.

If it's like the one in the Octy, then it can easily be removed for times when you don't need it.

Personally, I wouldn't bother with it. I'd probably go for the net system instead.

funny -we have a net in our Audi and never use it !!! i like the look of the side mounted nets though - could be very useful.

It's the side mounted nets that I use most in the Octy. I also use the rear net sometimes, as I stash my laptop bag and a few other bits in it. Stops them rolling around in the boot when there's nothing else in there.

I haven't ordered the nets with my Superb, as I've got a spare set left over from my vRS (it arrived with two sets). I'm hoping they'll fit the Superb. If not, I guess I'll be ordering them.

Can't see the point of it so much in the hatchback/saloon as they offer naturally more security. It is useful in the estate as can stash things underneath, like camera tripod, spare coat, walking boots, gloves etc so don't always need to use the cover thing. It does fold up in a kind of Z shape with notches in the rails to keep it there, allowing a small box at the back and so keeping things secure as well.

As mentioned above it means the floor is higher so our dog doesn't have as far to jump in. I think it also means we get a completely flat load space with the seats folded down.

That's a good point Burnsey. The flat load space in the Octy Estate is a nice advantage.

In the Superb, it's different. As the rear lip of the boot it so high, there is still quite a drop into the boot, even with the variable floor.

Nets: There was a video of a crash test on TV some months back showing what happened to a 'loose' toolbox sitting in the boot. The crash was only at 30 or 40mph. The box forced itself straight through the vertical split in the rear seats - and spanners and other tools flew everywhere in the cabin. It was really quite scary to see. It wouldn't be quite so bad with something lighter with more rounded edges.

I've never had nets in a car before but after seeing that video I've ordered them. They will reduce the impact speed of anything trying to get through or between the rear seats in the event of a crash. Everyone thinks about front end, or sides, and air bags - nobody mentions things coming at you from behind.

It's the same with loose dogs. Apparently at 30mph they fly forward with the equivalent force of an elephant!

blimey! what happens if your pet beagle already weighs as much as an elephant?....

Errm? I'd estimate the force of maybe 120 elephants?

I dont know how I could live without the variable floor in my octy, it comes in so handy. Not only can you put stuff under the floor with more on top, but you can also lock the floor vertically making 2 smaller compartments which is handy when transporting smaller items and the full boot space is not needed. Also with the octy it makes the load area flat, so that heavy items are easy to load and remove.

Dont bother with nets, buy some non slip rubber matting and a folding box. It has worked for us for the past 8 years. We look at the variable boot floor, could not see the point.
