Dual Mass Flywheel failure...symptoms?

Featured Replies

Evening all

What are the symptoms of DMF self destruction?

Got into my 05 plate work wagon yesterday and couldn't get any gears with the engine running.

Turned it off, slotted first and started the engine and off I went to my friendly local main dealer using skill and timing to A not stop and need the clutch and B go up and down the gearbox :D

Car (100hp TDI) is on 57k miles.

Dealer says it's possibly the DMF gone breasts up...

Ta

When mine went, I had no problems changing gears. There was a horrible knocking coming from the engine bay when idling or when the clutch was disengaged. Sounded like someone was repeatedly hitting the engine with a hammer at irregular intervals.

was the clutch pedal still going up and down as if it had plenty of hydraulic pressure?

as far as i know there shouldnt b bother selecting gears due to the flywheel thats ur clutch and if the dmf is destructing it would b a hell of a rattle/knocking as some1 said earlier !

Yep, felt perfect.

They're stripping it now as they aren't sure if it's the flywheel or the clutch that's knackered.

Will update...

When I had DMF probs with my Octy, the only simpton was the car juddering a lot when slipping the clutch.

sounds more like a clutch plate failure , possible friction material detached , this can jam and cause difficult/impossible gear selection with the engine running

should be ready tomorrow.
