Autolights with a mind of their own

Featured Replies

Do'es anyone else have problems with the autolight system? Mine sometimes are on in bright daylight (not at speed) and other times refuse to work in subdude light. Garage can't find a fault.

Yes, I get the same thing - I gave up after a while, anyone know where the sensor is, might be worth giving it a clean - I thought it might be the little knob thing in the middle of the dash?

I think sensor is on the back of the rearview mirror (not sure).

same problem. dont really care mind, as long as they come on at night

It's integrated to the rain sensor. The sensor behind the rearview mirror is just for the rearview mirror.

Yeah, that's true

Correction values can be applied to the rain/light sensor package that is attached to the windscreen but you will need to know your way around VCDS (VAG-COM) to do it properly. You can also monitor the amount of light the sensor is 'seeing' through VCDS, IIRC there are something like 7 levels.

The auto lights can be a bit of a pain and do seem to be a bit slow on the uptake sometimes.

I don't think it's sensitive to the entire human visual spectrum but more likely UV light or similar. I regularly notice the lights coming on in well lit car parks, tunnels and garages.

Okay, so does that mean i CAN get the lights fiddled with to make them less sensitive?? I had one dealer telling me I can't and another telling me they think they can, but not sure. At the mo, I don't have the autolights on cos I feel a bt of a tool havign xenons blasting away at 4 in the afternoon occassionally!;)

So what do I have to tell/show the garage to get them to do it?? Looked at the weblink but is that all they'll need to do it??

Thinking about it, the rain sensor could be desensitised a bit as well so if you have to do it in tandem I don't think it'd be a problem having that forced on me as well!

I think the first thing your dealer needs to do it to test the light levels the sensor is seeing under normal daylight and darkened conditions and go from there.

The correction values are there for a reason. Maybe the transparency value is off I don't know.

Have a look at the sensors themselves to see if there is anything on either side of the screen that could mess them up.

Failing that, the sensor could indeed be faulty. The hard bit is proving it.

My lights go a bit funny on occasions but don't stay on for long in broad daylight.

It's a '58 L&K and it all appears to work as it should, they just come on too early a lot of the time. To be honest, I've always put my lights on very late so i'd be interested to see what the darkest you can have it is and work back from there.

What should I be telling the garage to get them to do this??

As long as the lights behave in a consistent fashion (turn on at roughly the same light level) then it could be an adjustment issue. If they are sporadic then it could be a fault. If the VCDS can do it it's possible the dealer tool can as well.

The adjustment is a case of changing the coding, nothing physical to adjust.

Talk to your dealer again (the one who THINKS can adjust it) and mention the transparency correction.

Mine is an '07 L&K and my lights are coming on quite a bit later than 4PM. I might see if I can find out the correction value on my sensor tomorrow.

Don't bother. It doesn't help.

I've tried to adjust the light and rain sensor to be less sensitive with no luck. The adjustment range is actually so small that it doesn't have any perceivable difference on how the sensors react to either light or rain.

I think Theresias already mentioned something about this. He wrote that there's different versions of the sensor controller unit. Some work better than others. Newer version of the sensor package has a different detection mechanism and sensor layout.

Thanks for this thread but I even more confused now ...

My new VrS headlights are on all the time [ as soon as I start the car, a bit like on volvos ] , even if I put the light selector to Off.

Has this anything to do with the autolight ?

Might have a word with the dealer

You have the Scandinavia setting on. Byte 00 Bit 3 set to on in Central electronics module. Your dealer should easily code it off.

When that bit is set, the lights are always on. Doesn't care about the light switch position.

I noticed the sensors were totally different shapes on my 06 and 07 Octavias.

If the adjustent range is so small, why do they bother having it there in the first place?

A wider scaler of adjustment would probably help a lot of people out, the light/rain sensor pack is a bone of contention with quite a few people so it would seem.

I'm pretty sure that they we're never meant to be adjusted after initial adjustment.

Same prob - lights on in bright sun (had this on two Octavias).

Dealer agreed there was a prob, but could not fix.

After many letters to Skoda Uk and a suportive dealer I got my £45 back (cost of the extra) and a free first service.
