For those who have lowering kits or coil overs or adjustable coilovers

Featured Replies

After have my adjustable coilovers fitted for about a month i had my octy up on the ramps to do an oil change and noticed that the driver side drive (off side) shaft has a wear mark that runs almost all the way around it where the sub frame has been hitting it over bumps even at 30 mph (i live in middle of nowhere so roads not very flat very bumpy) it only happens on the drivers side as the shaft is thicker i am wondering if any one else has had this problem and if so how was it cured? my thought is to just grind a little out of the sub frame so it doesnt catch on the lip. Also I would like to know where you guys have bought your drop link arms from and how much?

This is the car as it sits now I would like to take 1 inch from the front and 1/2 from the rear any thoughts?DSC00250.jpg

Thanks Michael

You need shortened drop links mate :)

doesnt look excessively low to me, yeah second that shorter droplinks

Are you sure it is hitting the sub frame. I expect the drive shaft is rubbing on the Front ARB. As stated a fix is to either fit shorther ARB links or get a special ARB that has a wider sweep where the drive shaft goes. Your car does not seem that low though, unless your suspension is soft and when you go over a pot hole or bump it is enough to allow a slight rub on the drive shaft. what kit have you got.

iv got a race land kit from hot tuning i am sure it is not rubbing on the arb as the marks on the drive shaft are by the sub frame not neer the arb ill try and get sum pics of where it is rubbing when i can get it back up on the ramps

the ride is soft i suppose not as firm as i thought it would be when it was first put in looking at it on the ground there is 1 1/2 inch gap between the arb and the drive shalf and the wheels dont hit the arches when going over the bumps so i dont think that it is any where neer hitting the arb

this is where the coilovers are set for the front

18102008099.jpgany thoughts on what it is rubbing on????

Interesting, Is that mark to the right on the chassis from the drive shaft, seems a little far out. Can't see any other marks where the shaft has hit or rubbed. Are you sure it's rubbing. Can you hear it? Could it be that the mark could possibilty have been there for some time. Appreciate the pics ar not that clear to make a judgement.

it makes a loud knocking sound when going over the bigger bumps

the mark was not there before the coilies were fitted

i have also noticed that the lower wishbones are stuffed would this cause more movement in the drive shaft than usal?

I know on MKIV Golfs if you lower them beyond 40mm ish the ARB can rub on the driveshaft. Not sure if your car would have the same set up as most MKIV's or the TT, LCR set up?

the kit is to fit a mkIV golf/octaiva

Most of the pics dont work for me.

But looking on that last pic that I can see with you pointing, is the vehicle loaded at the time, ie on a four poster ramp? And how low are you running it. What model Octavia do you have?

  • Author

yes the car was on a 4 poster at the time it is a 1998 1.9 tdi glx (90BHP)

it is about 1inch from the top of the tyre (225/40/18) in the front and around 3/4 inch in the rear

What I meant was although the A3, Leon, Golf, Octavia etc. all use pretty much the same hardware, some of the hotter models and 4WD models have a different anti roll bar set up, I think they attatch on to the uprights rather than the lower arms. I'm not sure if the problem I refered to on the MKIV Golfs would apply or not to the Octavia because I don't know if your car or the vRS uses the same set up as them.

What make are they?

Its not a problem I can remember encountering.

they are either raceland or race tec i will have a look tomorrow
