Boot Locking Fault.

Featured Replies

My Superb has developed a problem with the boot lock.

The central locking system will not unlock the boot.

The remote release will not unlock it either.

The key unlocks it.

On the dashboard the warning indication on the "car outline" shows the boot open at all times.

When the car is locked this "indicator" flashes erratically.

Have removed the trim in the boot no voltage is appearing at the release solenoid and boot lock when the either the remote release or central locking is operated.

All other functions of the central locking and car outline are working.

Any thoughts Gents?

Dave

Most likely the microswitch in the boot latch. This is a standard pattern switch - you don't have to go to VAG for a replacement.

Thanks for that "rotodiesel".

Unfortunately thats not the problem.

Have just checked the microswitch which checks out ok, closed in one position of the lock, open in the other.

There is no voltage to earth on any of its plug pins.

Likewise no voltage appears on the opening solenoid plug when the locking is activated or deactivated.

All the doors on the car function on the display and unlock and lock on the key and door rocker switch.

Is there a control unit anywhere for the system?

Any further advice, "encouragement" willingly accepted, many thanks.

Dave

Unfortunately the control system is the dreaded CCM which is on the floor under the passesnger's seat and is liable to get wet due to poor VAG detailing. It might be worth a look but you have to remove the sill trim and lift the carpets to get to it.

Another possibility is fractured wires where they cross the boot hinge inside their rubber sleeve. This is actually quite well detailed on the B5.5 and I've not previously encountered any trouble here.

My car, when fairly new suffered from a failure to unlatch electrically, although you could do it with the key. The cause was a stiff boot latch pivot for the lever at the latch end which is pulled by the bowden. Fault finding is masked because the logic in the CCM removes power to the unlatch motor after about 2 seconds if it doesn't see an "I'm open" signal from the microswitch. This is to avoid burning out the motor.

In my case, one drop of oil fixed it for good. I wonder what a dealer would have done to it....

When you get it fixed, grease the trim clips before you put the boot lid lining back - they're crappy unplated steel and will be uselessly rusty next time you need to go in there.

Best of luck, rotodiesel.

Based on the fact it's not the switch, I'll stick my money on the module in the passenger footwell. Have you checked the carpets?

The carpets are and haved remained totally dry.

Will hopefully get round to lifting them and having a look at the module over the next few days.

It's certainly a good sign, but the "underlay" of the carpets in a Superb is quite thick so it's possible the surface is dry but the underneath is wet. The leak tends to happen invisibly.

Of course it's possible that it leaked on a previous owner and the damage has stayed even though the water's gone.

Let us know :)
