Thank Crunchy it's gearbox

Featured Replies

Sorry if this has been covered ad nauseam but I couldn't spot anything with a (quick) search.

For as long as I can recall (probably since new), my Octy has been slightly sluggish to engage 3rd gear going up from 2nd, and had benefited from a leisurely change. This has been more noticeable when the revs were higher, and/or when I'm "making progress".

Of late, whist my cruising speeds have been moderated (leading to 70+mpg figures), I'm countering this by enjoying getting to speed quicker where the change from 2nd to 3rd is usually approaching the red, and the problem is becoming more conspicuous.

As a precaution, I got my local dealer to change the gearbox oil last week (the car's now done just over 70k miles), and if anything the newer oil has actually made things worse.

The mechanic has been unable to replicate the problem, but it has been suggested that his driving style is, how should I put this, a little more restrained, and consequently unlikely appear when he's driving. Pressures of time have stopped me taking him out to demonstrate.

I don't have any concerns at the moment that the box is going to grenade, but before I investigate further I'd appreciate knowing if this is a common issue, though it may only be apparent to more spirited drivers.

A member on here had a similar problem with Fabia vRS and had the 3rd gear syncro replaced under warranty, eventually when out of warranty it started again, it annoyed him so much he replaced the full box :(

That's not encouraging, I suspect a new box would cost more than the car's worth (if the evaluations in the on-line guides are to be believed)

mines a bit notchy too hope you get it sorted.

It couldn't just be the selector adjustment?

mine has been crunchy for a while and now it wont engage at all 3rds totally gone.

The garage i use says skoda gearboxes are notorious for this.

Thing is a recon gearbox is £450 exchange and ebay ones are more.
