Petrol-Derv Depreciation

Featured Replies

Do you think that the Petrol vRS will be worth less than the Diesel vRS by the time they get to 3 year old (for example).

I'm imagining with the car tax been much cheaper for the derv and ins group and mileage etc that the diesels will be worth more perhaps?

What do you think? Will there be any difference between identical age/mileage cars?

Not significantly.

Diesels command the higher price because of their higher list price.

There's an 800 quid difference between the two.

At three years old I reckon you'll still have at least half of that retained if not more.

I know it's not a VRS but my Mk1 TDI cost about £900 more than the equivalent petrol engined car and had a book price of about £700 more when I traded it in after three years.

My Mk2 had a similar margin over the 2.0FSI and looking at the guides now it's worth £900 more than the petrol car after two and a bit years

reckon you will recoup about 50% of the additional cost (of diesel car over petrol)

Based on petrol & derv Octavia vRS's

12,000 miles per year - 35mpg (petrol - costing 99.9p) = £1557.07

12,000 miles per year - 50mpg (diesel - costing 111.9p) = £1220.87

£336.20 difference

Road Tax Petrol - £260

Road Tax Diesel - £120 (CR)

£140 difference

Total Difference Per Year (12,000miles) = £456.20

I think with the changes to road tax increasing the cost to tax the petrol version, the difference between the two will be greater than they are at new due to less people willing to pay the extra £60 per year for the petrol than you would do at the moment (and £140 more than the diesel will)

But as the diesel costs more to buy anyway, it will already be worth more come trade in.
