VAG COM Problems

Featured Replies

Hello, today I received my VAG COM cable and software but Im having problems getting it working. When I do the line test, it says that the port is ok but nothing for the interface.

When I plugged the cable in, it did not ask for a driver to be installed but does the cable need a driver to work? It has COM ports 1-4, then a USB selection but doesnt seem to work.

Anyone got any ideas or had similar problems?

Is it a genuine ross-tech or aftermarket cable?

Does it show in Device Manager as serial cable.

If yes go to it and change the Com port to 1, 2, 3 or 4. Then use the same port in vag com.

Good question and also is it plugged into the car, with ignition on?

How do you view serial cables in Device Manager?

On COM3 I get:

Port Status: Ok

Interface: Found!

Type: Serial Pass Through

Opto/Iso: No

Ross-Tech Design: No

I got it off ebay and the guy said to make sure Im choosing the right port. I would have thought I would select USB.

Many of the "pattern" cables emulate COM ports, so using it as a USB device is not right. Having said that I don't think you'll get a perfect answer from us as there are so many variables in a non-genuine cable.

Have you actually tried using it on COM3 and scanning your car?

You need to have the usb to serial driver installed then match up what com port you are using in device manager to the port vag-com is using. Usb won't work.

If its a fleabay special you need the drivers to make the cable work and emulate a serial port the usb option won't work. Also in the setup for vagcom there is a little tick box for run in dumb mode or something like that. Mine worked once I ticked this box, after installing the drivers that is - did you get a cd with it.

First off - I tried running it when plugged into the car but it said there was no response - doubt the car is at fault there!

Secondly - I got a driver with the CD but when I double click the .exe file, it opens up an uninstaller, which if I click ok, says there is no file. Im not sure how to activate the driver installation.

Thirdly - I havent tried dumb mode but what difference does this make? Do you have to register the program for it to run in non dumb mode?

Cheers

you tried it with the ignition on didnt you?

No. The shareware version of the product should run with no problem. Your problem as others have said are the drivers and the install. Contact you fleabay supplier for support. After all, you did pay him and he ought to offer real support. Don't you agree?

I think it is a driver problem because when its connected, I cannot see it anywhere within device manager. Its an ecutools.com cable from ebay.

My instincts tell me that there is a problem with the cable itself as it should appear in device manager, driver or not!

Is there a green led on the end of the cable? Does it light up when you plug it in?

Will give this a try tonight 'cos I just wasnt having any luck yesterday!

The light on the cable flashed but when I go to OBD-II Function, and do compatability test, it says test complete and that my car is NOT ISO/OBD-II Compatinle!

It’s a 2000 Fabia Comfort 1.4 16V. I just used COM3 described above and when I do for example a test of engine controller, it says no response from controller.

Hope this driver sorts it!

When you do get it running you will probably have the 'cant synch baud rate problem' use 9600 for your engine ECU.

Ross-Tech: VAG-COM: Issues

Have you tried ECU's other than the engine?

have a look in device manager for 'Ports (COM & LPT). What is listed there? Any unknown devices listed?
