72.8 Nm torque - how does this rate?

Featured Replies

Looking at my BHP and torque plots yesterday:O I see that the max torque delivered is 72.8 Nm @ 3000RPM. BHP is 44 at 4800RPM. My car has a displacement of 1046CC.

How does this rate? Does this sound competitive with similar sized engines of today (my car is 20 years old)?

TH

competitive? ummm, no. :) I would think even today's 1 litre engines produce around 55-60hp and torque around the same in lb/ft (so around 90 Nm at a guess)

Still - it's not a classic is it?! ;)

apparently the 1.0MPi (998 cc) in the Seat Arosa was 86 Nm and 50 bhp, the 1.1 (1061 cc) in the Suzuki Alto was 85 Nm and 61 bhp, the 1.1 (1108 cc) in the Seicento was 86 Nm and 54 bhp...etc, so it's not that bad :)

and the 1.2 16v (technically 1149cc) in the Renaults pushes out 85bhp.

is that the turbo'd one?

Nope.. thats the N/A one... turboed is over 100bhp

Remember though that these cars, despite being smaller than a shoebox, still weigh as much as a fat elephant (slight exaggeration but you get the picture) whereas your older car will in all likelihood be a lot less. The power to weight ration probably isn't too dissimilar once that's been taken into account.

the fiat, seat and suzuki were all under 900kg (the fiat is 765kg), so hardly what you'd call hefty (although they are teeny, tiny little cars)

Hmm, I think the weight of mine is around 930 Kg. Not too heavy. 0-62 is rated at 24 seconds - quite brisk.

0-62 is rated at 24 seconds - quite brisk.

In Hemel Hempstead that might be "brisk", in the rest of the world it's performance that is best described as tidal. ;)

My guess is that it would accelerate faster if pushed off a cliff :D

Well, with a bit of hustling with the gear lever and a bit of deft clutchwork, some bigger and badder metal has been left behind:cool:. I recon after a tune-up I can get the 0-60 dash down to 22-23 seconds:thumbup:.

but...buses and dust carts are not the things you usually brag about beating in a TLGP :P

The 1987 Charade did 99bhp from 3 cylinders and a 0-60 in under 8 seconds ;)

The felicia 1.3 has 106.99 NM at 2600rpm.

I mean your figures aren't too bad... but certainly not too impressive by todays standards or even cars a few years old.
