Just picked up Fabia No 2

Featured Replies

Just collected Dad's 05 plate 1.4 16v from the dealers. Great transaction - price was fair and new disks were fitted and a full service carried prior to collection, so that made him happy. Leaky doors fixed too.

One thing I noted driving it home was that it was a bit low geared. At a speedo 80 (real 75) I saw 4000RPM and the engine sounded 'busy'. Is it OK to hold the car at 4000 revs on the motorway for an extended time or will it lead to undue engine wear? He wants to keep the car for a long time and look after the engine.

Also, the car jolts randomly when ticking over, but it has had new plugs etc. Is this normal? It is almost like a misfire but the revs don't change - just the car sems to jerk a bit. Probably nothing....

Thanks for any input or advice,

TH (a 4 Skoda family now:P)

My 1.4 is a bit "wobbly" on tick over - put it down to a characteristic tho.

Mine seems to be opposite to yours, i can really push Lissy and hit maybe 3000RPM, infact I think i have once gone over 3000 - and I am an "engine killer" as my other half puts it as i sit in 2nd till I get to 60 as "everyday driving"

Thanks - got the feeling the engine vibration was normal:thumbup:.

So 3000RPM is a reccomended max for this engine? Are you sure you meant 60MPH in second gear? That would be well over 3000 I would think...

Anyway, he is pleased with the car. I hope it lasts him.

TH

Yup! Deffo can do 60 in 2nd easily..... I swear my engine doesnt behave like a 1.4!

Glad hes pleased with it - I love Lissy, best purchase I ever made :D Every other car i have owned spent more time in garage than bein driven (prob due to my awfully irratic driving coupled with paranoia as slightest twinge and I book it in) but touch wood only issue i had is suspension after shovin coiles on her

60 in second:eek:! Even my vRS cannot make that:O.

TH

I am a self confessed engine killer tho! I know i am doin her no good - when the 1.4 dies tho shes gettin a Polo GTi engine in her so i dont really care all that much

doin 70mph in 4th gear she was sittin just below 2000RPM - 5th is reserved only for motorways even then i sometimes cba

"70mph in 4th gear she was sittin just below 2000RPM"

Are you sure? 70 in FIFTH is 3600 RPM for me in Dad's 1.4 petrol model. Have you changed the gearbox?

TH

nope shes standard apart from green cotton air filter, coiles and alloys.

T'other half drove her tho and said she doesnt behave like a 1.4 at all.

I am just writin a shopping list for stickin a supercharger on her tho :D

That isn't a 1.4 if the figures you quoted are correct. not a chance, not a standard one anyway. post a pic of the engine bay... (i'll buy you a pint if i'm wrong.)

lol -got me wonderin if i am imagining things now. off out for a revving session in a bit - will take piccys of the dials hehe

oh p.s deffo 1.4 - Lummox can confirm this for u as hes poked at her

Were the gearbox ratios changed over this models lifespan?

TH

Sitting at 80MPH in 5th on a motorway for prolonged periods in a 1.4 16V wont damage your engine at all.In fact, do it more good than pootling along at 50, or lots of stop start town work. Seems a bit high on the revs though, as a 1.3 Rapid is only doing about 3800rpm at 80MPH in 5th.

  • Author

I thought that. I could hold my Rapid at a speedo 85 and still be at around 3800. Rapid is 20.9 MPH/1000RPM in top. At 4000RPM on Dad's new Fabia, the engine sound starts to become a bit intrusive into the cabin. At 70 it is lovely - just not at any more...

Fabia 1.4 16v is 19.5 MPH/1000RPM in top I found out today. More power than the Rapid, but lower gearing. Wonder why?
