I broke down today :(

Featured Replies

As above

I was driving from my house at 6.30am , and I noticed that my temp guage was not going up as much as it was , so I though "mmm I wonder if it is the thermostat"

Then as I got to near Maltby , which is a little side road that is all dark , I though "mmm my lights are not very bright , I must have a bulb out"

Then I got to the M18 and a couple of warning lights come on , I thought "OOPS"

Then as I got from the M18 on to the M1 , no wipers , then all the rest of the warning lights came on for fun and to join in , then all the lights went out :( , how scary at 6.35am on the M1 near to junction 33

So I pulled on to the hard shoulder , not indicating as they had gone too :thumbdwn: ooh and the Hazzards just to join in on the fun

So I called my Mark , bless to come help , he had gone back to bed as it is his day off today , so yes he is on his way

Then I called the RAC , she said "can you see a pole with a number on?" , ooh yes it was just beside the great big ditch that I nearly fell down

It said 55-1 on it

It was pitch black , my car had no lights , flamin raining and bloody cold :( so not the best start

Then to top it off , I had realised I had left my tea in the car , but was NOT going back over the railings to get it

So 20mins passes and then my Mark pulled up bless him , with a coat and he got me my tea

So 1 hour 3 mins after I had called the RAC , I called again , to be tols agin that I am priority :( , but it would be another 25 mins as they had me as being at junction 13  how on earth!!!!

But then as it gets lighter , I noticed that the pole with the 55-1 on it , had a missing reflective sticker which should have been a 2 in front :( ooh by this time I am fuming and frozen

So I pinched my Marks hat , sat on the floor and put his hat on my feet  as they was frozen

Then a call from the guy from RAC , he is on his way!!!!

I was so happy it was not until I put the phone down that I realised that he had me going south bound , not north :( that was just marvellous

But it so happened that he spotted us!!!!!! :woot: and pulled accross the lanes and then reversed up!!!!

Not good , but his heater was great!!!!!! :D and I sat there while my Mark and the RAC guy had a look at my car

Alternator!!!!!!!! flamin heck!!!!!!

But at least I know that it was not too bad

So off I went to work , 8.30am , nearly 2 hours later than I should have been , in my Mark`s Octavia , Mark has taken my car to be put on the poorly bed :(

Now I did notice that the ques was building up rather alot , and everyone looking to see what accident had occured

So I am sorry if I held anyone up this morning , but it was me , and nobody stopped to help , bar the nice RAC guy who was approx 1 hour late

Oh and then to top it off nicely M62 had issues , so everyone came my way and Tintwhistle was chokka!!!!!

Eventually got on to the M60 and there was problems down near where I had to get off because the M62 was closed (I think) , so quite a long drive to work today

Just hope that I dont have to encounter all that on the way home :finger:

I think this has to be one of the longest post I have ever done

Sarah

Blimey Sarah... think you need to move closer to work.

Makes you wonder why cars don't have ammeters anymore, 'cos the battery light didn't seem to be any help to you...

Glad you got in OK in the end, though!

:( Oooh it was a mare , but my Mark was a gem bless him

Got there OK eventually , but just before I broke down , I had heard about the M6 crash , so it does make you a tad more weiry

Move closer , blimey wish it was that easy , there you go another long tale , if I ever had time to tell

Sarah

Hope it gets sorted... scary stuff. Glad you're okay.

I would have stopped but I was on the wrong motorway...

Should have just got them to tow it to work :)

Daft question but after the first problems you noticed and then the warning lights would it not have made sense to pull over into the first services or suitable place you could find?

Makes you wonder why cars don't have ammeters anymore

Probably for the same reason that the temperature gauge is "damped" and doesn't change in true "real time" - some people would constantly worry about the ammeter reading "0" or close to "0" even if the battery is fully charged and no electrical items are being used.

Had an identical problem in my Ibiza, on the M6, at night - happened much quicker and went from all OK at 80 in lane 3, to no lights and having to find the hard shoulder

My breakdown cover arrived with much less difficulty though, 50 mins from calling

Mine was a fault with the wiring loom, so I got going again - I ended up needing a new alternator though, as it had failed because of the wiring :thumbdwn:

It's all character-building

No services , no layby , just hard shoulder all the way

I hoped that I could have made it to Junction 33 to get off , but the lights had gone by then

They put a booster pack on that would have lasted approx 30 mins , so it was easier to take it back home

Just trying to organise a new alternator now :(

Yup , that is what I think too ;)

Sarah

If it happens to be the same alternator as the one that fits a 1.9SDI fabia (not likely but hey!) I think I still have one hanging around. It was fitted to one of my fabias for ~ 400 miles and then taken off again.

Oooh , is it a 120amp one?

Sarah

I'll have to find out later, would it help if I supplied the part number (assuming it's going to be stamped on it)?

Mmm

I am going to need it today though :( sorry , I am a woman in need today ,

Thank you for the offer though , I am going to have to get one from the factors or something :(

Sarah

sorry to hear about the car sarah, had this go on my astra a few weeks before i collected my octy. wasnt happy and yes a wierd experience as one thing after the other fails. hope you get it sorted soon and cheaply as they can be expensive (mine was as there was two different alternators and mine only took the expensive one)!!

I have an alternator off a 1.9 SDI if you want it. Mate's rates. :D

I believe there's a garage somewhere in Irlam supposed to be reasonable.......

Good grief Sarah!!!! I can’t believe you commute such a distance every day and on the M62, of all the awful motorways to have to do it on. :grouphug:

For what it is worth, if you had broken down at marker post 55/1 you would have been on my stretch of the M1 and I could have chased that RAC up for you. It is always worth picking up an SOS phone at the side of the road. Your exact location comes up in the control room and we have a police/highways agency lines into all the breakdown company control rooms.

Sorry you had such a crap time of getting recovered, but the RAC is much better than the AA.

I am in work this afternoon, so I will report that marker post to the relevent people for the next person :o

Electrical failure is not nice. I had it in the MX5 a few months back. rush hour M56/M6 merge. Middle lane 70mph...all dials flicked over and then back to zero. Along with an erie silence from the now unresponsive engine. Mx5 hood up, electrical windows middle lane, no power, no brake lights, no acceleration, nothing. Got to the hard should a little frazzled. Highways guy pulls up and says I've not parked in the best spot, so I took some time in telling him it was better than the middle lane and he agreed.

So yes, spark problems scare me now, it was the can't wind the windows down to flap my arms in a panic that scared me most :)

Aww Sarah that sucks, I live in Maltby, and infact was coming back from Sheffield (other side of the road) that morning, should have given me a shout and I would have brought you a cuppa :)

Ye Gods. Glad you're OK

Could i suggest that briskoda mods have a mobile number we can call by region/location , for emergecy use , we can then all bo contactable by phone and rush to a help a fellow members ( only the females of course )

Sarah has my number, and I think she tried to call. Sadly I couldn't get to the phone. My bad Sarah, if I had known you were in distress I would have found a way ;)

Bad Bad Bad day :thumbdwn:

Shouldn't happen to such a nice lady :)

Sympathies indeed.
