HID ----> High-intensity discharge lamp - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Those are blanks and when I was fitting them I decided to see which way around they would look best. I decided to go for the way I glued them on, and left them black too. :)

I went out for about 2 or 3 miles to get the wall photo done above, and no-one flashed me during that time. I could see the beam was not too high even before I got to the wall for the photo.

Isn't gasoil in the UK chemically different from Diesel? I'm sure the diesel my dad sells (for boats) is not diesel but gasoil, the two being different due to the slightly lower flash point of gasoil and the differences in amounts of sulphur and other "stuff" (technical term!). I know that the difference has caused some problems, particularly with diesel heaters, such as eberspachers, originally designed for trucks i believe, but also used on boats. They find it difficult to run on gasoil due to being designed to run on diesel.

I might be talking nonsense here! - and i'm certainly waaaaaay of topic.

still way off topic, gasoil is just another name for red diesel, but don't worry you still meet all criteria for the manly man club by sounding like you know what your on about:P

nice lights jase, have you run out of things to mod yet:D

Hello mate, well done on fitting your HID's, what a pain they are to fit, such a tight fit in the small engine bay, Ive had mine fitted in my vrs for about 4 weeks now and all fine. On your kit and like one of the other guys said, I wouldnt of drilled into the top of the cover, did you not get a rubber gromet with your kit?. If you ever get chance to look at a fabia with HID's fitted as standard they fit the wires through the back of the casing with a rubber gromet, thats how ive done mine, can get some pics if you want to have a look.

Some people seemed concerned about blinding other drivers, I have had this kit fitted on my last 3 cars now, my old Audi A4, Volvo S40 then ono my fabia vrs, I would never change back, nor have I never been flashed, if you take your time, fit them correctly go for the 6000k kit you should be ok. I like things to be 100% perfect ( its an RAF thing, now ex RAF lol) any issues and I would not have them fitted, HID's are so much better, they light up signs alot clearer and further away, they are not stupidly brite but do give you a clearer light onto the road.

Here is a pic of my beam pattern with one fitted against the other.

Sorry devonutopia to hijak your thread, but just wanted to give people some info which I was always concerned about before I fitted them,

cheers ian

Thinking back there was a rubber grommetty thing somewhere, but I tucked that inside and went for the option I did. :) There's not enough "gap" there fore anything to get down so I'm not worried. I've ran one headlight with no cover at all for several weeks after it fell off, and out the bottom. Took a while to get a replacement and the lights never suffered.

Yeah, when I had mine you just drilled a 25mm hole in the back of the cover and grommit sat tight.

I had a set on mine almost a year ago now.

At first I thought they were fine, but I soon found out that with anyone in the back I would get flashed by every single driver going down the road, and for some reason even with nobody in the back BUS DRIVERS would always flash me?!

Took them out in the end cos I couldnt be bothered to fiddle about with them for the MOT.

They dont look good on these style of headlights IMO anyway, just a big blob of blue.

you mentioned the flickering. have you disablled the thing that checks for blown bulbs, cant remember what its called

looks good and what a difference to the standard bulbs

A HID kit is on my shopping list lol

You can see the extra glare created quite easily too.... ;)

Fooook! It's bright

And that wouldn't p*ss you off coming towards you or behind you? Look at the huge amount of glare even the camera is picking up.

I have a fabia i regularly see around this way who has done this and it's awful and blinding.

Also a more helpful point if you look at the front of the halogen bulbs you will see some of it is blacked out so all the light moving forward is projected by the reflector.

If you look at the HID you will notice there isn't one of these, so you need to get a front to sit it in and block the light from going forward directly from the bulb without going via the reflector. It's the sort of thing you have in the octy MK I and the golf with the little VW logos on it.

Since you don't have projectors maybe changing the bulbs to these ones might suit better:

H7R Anti-glare replacement HID bulbs - NEW! :: H7R Anti-Glare Bulbs - NEW! :: HID Replacement Xenon Bulbs :: HIDS4U Ltd - UK's Number 1 HID Conversion Kit Specialists

That is what I feel causes most of the blinding from HID's in my experience.

Yep, pull back 20 yards and compare the patterns then.

^ I tried some of those H7R

They did little to reduce glare.

If the Fabia had bulb guards they may be ok.

I just fitted some HIDS to my friends Old model Focus, it has reflectors, but has a large prism in front of the bulb. he drove behind me and yes, whilst it was a fair bit brighter, he wasnt exactly blinding me.

I think HID's would look a lot better in normal lenses if they were the less blue ones... I.e. 5000k.

Have been considering these myself.

Image whows 5000k on the right and 6000k on the left.

bmw_xtec_comparison.jpg

I prefer the 5000k as they have a less chavvy look about them and have a whiter/brighter light!

Could you not get a projector style lamp for the fabia and would that not improve things?

phil

i personally would look at seeing if you could flatten the beams a bit more, but otherwise not that bad for a xenon wannabe ;)

Maybe where those bulbs with a cap on the end might be good... they should take away some of that glare from the middle and the outer edges.

They also have something similar in a H4 fitment. Known as Supreme Vison bulbs they have a cap over the end to stop glare with dipped/low beam.

They are priced at £249.99 but with a code you can get them for just £187.49!!

Phil

^ You can get a HID kitt off ebay for £35

Yes but are they any good?

You find most of them advertise as being "Top quality bosch HID upgrade kit"..... Bosch don't even make a HID kit!!!

lol

Phil

indeed - manly men know when to stop.

Anyway - Just been out in the mongrel to find a car park in town with a wall I could check the beam against.

Sorry, but that is terrible, my eyes hurt just looking at the picture. You have pink slip written all over that car :thumbdwn:

its the reason why i suggested that it needs to be flat lined, maybe with tape on the bulb or on the light lens.

Maybe there are some little caps you could buy/manufacture to cover the end of the bulb copying the design of the new bulbs offered by HIDS4U?

phil

Oh dear :(

With Jason's image in mind above, I always go back to thinking, 'there's a reason that factory xenons always run behind a projector lens'.

Without, there's just far too much glare and lack of direction.

Steve

Its not helped I think by the blue tint they have... would look much better if it was a white light me thinks!

But like i said before... would it not be possible to fit prjector lenses from a fabia with factory fit xenons?

Closest to natural daylight is probably the 4500k kits.

I can see no reason why you couldn't pick up a set of projector units from a xenon-equipped Fabia, and use them with an HID kit. The only issue is finding them for a reasonable price, or finding a Fabia being broken down that had xenons fitted. They're quite an expensive part new IIRC.

If you have plenty of this £££££, then yes

That image is just the rubbish camera not able to make use of the light. It is not glarey like that when viewed with real eyes. See the image where the car is facing a wall and you can see there is a good level flat beam which points down at the road and no beam scatter to blind people. No-one has flashed me yet, so please don't take my "blinding image" photo to be what it is like in reality. Just the consequences of the crap camera.
