The mongrels HID installation! Pics!

Featured Replies

Even by my usual standards, this was a relatively easy job. Remove old bulb, stic, in new one. Attach spade connector to oem plug for H7 bulb, and stick the ballast in. Some "adaption" of the headlamp covers but I'm well impressed. Will nip out later when it's dark to ensure the beam is pretty accurate. Here's some pics. Bear in mind it is bright daylight down here.

Firstly - what was needed to attack the job. Possibly a little OTT on the tool front.

Hmm, a little cramped around the that bloody fuel filter!

However, I got it in and working before thinking about fitting everything. A comparative shot of the HID on and the halogen bulb (note these are the powerbulbs special halogens as well!)

Ballast stuck in on the side of the chassis, and the headlamp cover "adapted" :D to allow the wiring to get in. Was chuffed everything in the HID wiring could tuck in there too.

Hmmm, access to the driver's side looks even worse!

DSCN2451.jpg

However, whipping the BMC out the way soon unveils loadsa room! God bless the moment I thought about putting the battery in the boot....

The "snorkel" effect.

This is how I butchered the covers. Firstly, remove the insulation and rip out approx 2cm of it.

DSCN2454.jpg

Then 30 seconds with a pair of bull nosed pliers made short work of the two thin layers of plastic. This creates the "hole" for the wiring.

DSCN2455.jpg

And the butchered cover is refitted, with the wiring fitting nicely in the gap. :)

DSCN2456.jpg

The ballast is again stuck to the side of the car, and the wiring tucked underneath the slam panel.

And how it looks at the moment with both HIDs fitted and working.

Looking good , but I'd have cut the notch in the covers at the bottom rather than the top so water can drain out rather than just get in there.

Where did you get the kit from out of interest?

I know what you mean, but it was too awkward not being able to see plus I think the gap is "tight" enough for nothing to get between cover and wiring. I also don't think it gets all that wet anyway. :)

The kit came from John on here (skudmissile) and I have absolutely no idea where he got it from. It was a bargain price though for a new kit.

Good job Jason - was gonna ask if this was John's kit

What output are they? 6000k?

6000k yup - a nicer whiter light than the other choices - I think 8000k tends to be a bit bluer.

cue all the people bitching about light beam pattern and aftermarket HID conversion kits, lol.

Which is why I'm nipping out when it's dark to find a wall to park against and check the pattern is good. If the pattern is all over the shop I can go back to the normal bulbs without any real issue. Hoping this kit is good as it is made by Zeee Germanzzz

I have an anftermarket set of hid after i got them fitted took them to my local mot place and there is a beam pattern and had them adjusted so there at the correct hight etc.

They are so much better than normal bulbs would never go back :)

I've found elsewhere that apparently kits you can get now have really small ballasts in comparison to these. Doesn't bother me as they're small enough to tuck away like they are. Now you can get them credit card sized, and about 1cm thick.

whats the little radiator at the top infront of the main radiator Jason? oil cooler?

Diesel cooler i'm guessing?

That is such a cool Fabia, looks like an easy job to do as well.

What kind of money do you need to spend to get a HID conversion?

About £30 in my case. :D But generally I think a decent kit can be had for sub £100.

When I fitted them I realised my spare bulb kit was kind of useless now. Can you get HID bulbs separately? I assume so. They also were an integral part of the whole wiring so not sure how they are changed either.

Getting darker now, so getting ready to nip out for beam testing.

Yes - and the little rad is the oil cooler. Cools down the fuel before going back into the fuel tank. :)

Nice work jason

The packaging was a little crap but the units look of good quality.

I have the same kit in my fog lights now, albeit a different bulb size d'OH

Really does light up the dark roads now when i need to. hid fogs, hid main and dipped beam! its like driving in the daylight

Speaking as a manly man - i would think that oil should not be going into your diesel tank :P

Ummm - Diesel in an oil! You should know that being a manly man. :P Most European countries call it "gasoil" :)

:rofl::thumbup:

Isn't gasoil in the UK chemically different from Diesel? I'm sure the diesel my dad sells (for boats) is not diesel but gasoil, the two being different due to the slightly lower flash point of gasoil and the differences in amounts of sulphur and other "stuff" (technical term!). I know that the difference has caused some problems, particularly with diesel heaters, such as eberspachers, originally designed for trucks i believe, but also used on boats. They find it difficult to run on gasoil due to being designed to run on diesel.

I might be talking nonsense here! - and i'm certainly waaaaaay of topic.

indeed - manly men know when to stop.

Anyway - Just been out in the mongrel to find a car park in town with a wall I could check the beam against.

Fooook! It's bright

Lighting up my mate's supercharged XJR

DSCN2462.jpg

Beam looks level and solid, with no breaks. I did notice it flickering ever so slightly though which I'm not sure is normal or not.

DSCN2463.jpg

They do look good i think the HID are wicked but im not sure you can change the bulbs on most aftermarket kits mine you cant but HID bulbs last forever almost.

They look spot on. Where do you get them John? Quite fancy a set of these given that it appears you won't be blinding everyone coming the other way.

Top job Jason, again as usual. I need to spend more cash lol ;)

Are your headlight washers on backwards?

Are your headlight washers on backwards?

Lol.. yeh could do with wizzing over with some silver paint!

Top job though... You been out in it properly yet? Been flashed at all?

Phil

I don't think headlight washers are fitted. I think the black bits are just blanks.

Interestingly what is an HID kit? and what are the benefits of it?
