Octavia vRS - Just snapped a front spring!

Featured Replies

noticed a strange twanging noise when turning at low speeds, took a look under the bonnet and saw the drivers side strut was mounted right up against the bodywork whereas the passenger side protrudes a fair bit. Take a look at the spring to notice a not unsubstantial amount of it just lying there not attached to anything :thumbdwn:

Upon close inspection of it, it looks like it's rusted all the way through and just failed. For a car that's only done 48K I think that's absolutely pathetic! Anybody else experienced the same, and is there any chance I can get skoda to replace them both for free? I wouldn't expect that on a car with 4 times the mileage so to say I'm a bit peeved is an understatement!

oh and hi btw, I'm Tom

Surely that's a manufacturing defect of some kind? I'd be a little concerned if this happened frequently due to a bit of rust :D

Happens quite a lot, its age not mileage.

Loads of threads on here about it and ive seen em break on Golfs and Leons alike.

This has just happened to mine although I have done nearly 90K

Oh that looks bad!

Welcome to the forum Tom

I had this happen on mine but not rusted, Skoda weren't interested.

They recommend replacing them in pairs and not too expensive to replace. I went to an independant but they bought the parts through the dealer.

bizarrely this is a very common occurence these days, across the board of makes. Mate of mine has a garage and he changes a few a month, I was quite shocked.

Coil spring should never fail on a road car in normal circumstances - all the rally stage miles I've done in the past in MK2 Escorts and the like and never ever broken a coil spring back then..

Hi Tom, and welcome to the forums.

That failure has been brewing for a while, and in my opinion is probably a result of a manufacturing defect, proving it and getting anyone to admit it is the difficult bit.

It looks like it has had microcracks that have had the cyclic stress of being a suspension spring and the crack has simply grown over time, the rusty areas within the break are the bits that have ben lying dormant for a while and when it has reached its yield point its left the shiny new bit.

Looks like there could have possibly been a touch of porosity in it as well but difficult to tell.

Yeah thats what I thought :confused::P

:D

I've just been writing condition reports on some mechanical plant I have been surveying, im trying hard to get all the guff out my system :D

As Lummox says, there are lots of threads on here about this problem.

What strikes me is not that they are snapping, which would indicate a materials problem, but that they all seem to be going in about the same place, which surely points more to a mechanical problem for example in the geometry of the suspension setup.

speaking to APS today they say its pretty rare on the fwd models but 4wd models apparently the rear springs go a lot due to the way its setup they rust quickly.

My front driver's side sping broke yesterday :(

Had a quick look on the net but been told you can only get them from Skoda. I've managed to get one through a mate that works in the trade for £65

Mine has done about 65k on a 03

I would seriously consider changing a pair at the very least mate, i know its a sore expense, but worth it in the long run.

I'd buy a set of H&R springs to replace the Skoda items personally.

Think they are about £150 for 4, and come in a range of heights if you don't want to lower the car too much.

Why go back to the same springs that just let you down.....

The main reason would be if you change them to non-OEM (equivalent?) it probably qualifies as a modification for insurance purposes. Not sure though :)

Yes I know what you mean but it's tight times for me at the moment..

Will see how it sit's or feels on the road and take it from there. But suppose it's like my mate said, if ones gone how long before the other will.

It's not so much as to how long will the other last as a case of the new one will almost certainly sit slightly higher and be firmer than the old one effecting stability under braking, cornering etc.

I would never consider doing just the one side whether it be a bush, balljoint, spring or shock

Yep agree, no way would i just fit the one.

Thanks for the info, your probably all right...

Might just have to wait a couple of weeks till I have the cash.... mortgage should be coming down so that will help :)

Looks like I've just lost a front spring, (@ 86k). Going to get it off this afternoon to check.

Does anyone know if I can get replacements from VW or will I need to go to a Skoda dealer? Also does anyone have the part number?

TIA

Mine went 3 weeks ago after 57k miles on a 2001 Octy :( . I took it to local Skoda dealer and was quoted £178 for one, but was told it's best practice to do them in pairs, I was under the threat of redundancy at the time and only wanted to have one replaced. After 3 days I got a phone call saying the good news was they had fixed the spring, the bad news is that the other one had snapped while on a test drive!. I was told it would now cost £330 (with a discount). I said I'd give them £300, and after a bit of ummming and arrrring they said ok. I don't know if they were taking a lend but I got there in the end!

Ps mine looked exactly like yours does in the photo

£300 for 2 springs bloody hell that alot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11:O
