Crazy day in the new Octy...

Featured Replies

I've got Federal 595s onthe rear of mine and apart from them being noisy they've been fine , realpced the front ones for Bridgestones but they'd be fine as well and had absolutely no cornering issues at all.

Sorry, my mistake. Your right - It's the 595RS I'm thinking of. I'll edit my original post. cheers

Just in case anyone didn't know (and I'm sure most of you do, but it hasn't been mentioned yet) - If the tyres were really, really new (like less than 100 miles) they might have still had a coating of the goopy stuff that is put on the tread moulds to help them release. This stuff is very slippery, especially on wet/damp roads. Anytime you get new tyres you should drive around gently for a while before "trying them out" on a corner (otherwise, as the saying goes: "results are unpredictable" :(

That said, I'm also firm believer in always having good tyres. So much so that I will replace tyres that have heaps of tread once they get more than 3-4 years old (tyres go "off" and lose their grip with age). I won't run "cheapo" tyres that don't grip well, no matter what the monetary saving.

one of my rules of thumb when buying any car is "if it's got sh*tty tyres walk away". My logic being that if they can't afford reasonable rubber, then it probably won't have been looked after that well (e.g. servicing etc). I was taught to drive by a traffic cop - he said the 2 most important things on your car are the tyres and the brakes. Guess it just stuck. Amazing after over 20 years of driving ;)

Thankfully you weren't hurt, and maybe it wasn't the sole reason for your skid, but it's one less thing to worry about in future.

yeah, i'd definately get some proper rubber on your wheels. I have the Vredsteins mentioned earlier and I find them to be very confident. I hope your reaction to the slipping was in line with Roadcraft...!

This morning I was driving to Birkenhead and as I was taking a bend, I think must have hit a patch of oil or something as ALL 4 wheels completely lost traction - I was steering around the bend at around 30mph but the car carried on going straight.

 As I live in Wirral I'd be very grateful if you'd let me know exactly where you had this frightening event. Possibly too late now but I'll go and have a look.

Guys, thanks so much for all the responses - I think you're all right in relation to getting some decent tyres on the car asap - it just doesn't feel as if it's properly sticking to the road really, and the Talons on the back are going to have to come off for sure.

I'll get the geometry looked at over the weekend if I get a chance, but the kerb collision doesn't appear to have altered the drive in any way, however I will get it checked over.

As far as the loud crack was concerned, I'm fairly certain it was the documented fault with the radio, which I'll be speaking to the dealer about.

bertj - it wasn't actually in the Wirral - I was still in Liverpool. You go along West Derby Road past the Grafton, turn left onto Low Hill and then it was the right bend off Low Hill onto Erskine Street heading towards the centre of town - from speaking to people, quite a few have told me they have had near misses on that bend - pretty scary stuff.
