Mondello Track Day Monday 27/10/2008 - aftermath and pictures

Featured Replies

OK folks a magnificent turnout on the day with only one of our cars missing (sold... :) )

The weather was magnificent for most of the day with only the last 45 mins or so spoiled by rain, when it turned into a drifters meet.

A big thanks to Gaff for the pictures featured here (edited by me) and the full complement of pictures are here :

A big thanks to Robbie for the mobile workshop (warm seats, gennie, tools, air, tea & coffee, fuel, tools, etc.) Sorry the day didn't have a happy ending for you.

Over the next couple of days there is some video to be edited and uploaded. I'll get that done as soon as it comes to hand.

Me leaving the pit-lane furiously passing track rescue vehicles (parked). This was as much as I passed all day, apart from the guys in the kitty litter. :)

Turning into pit-lane after yet another red flag. At times there seemed to be more cars in the grass or gravel than on the track, and that was before the rain!

Speeding down the start / finish straight to adulation from thousands of screaming fans - well maybe the odd sea-gull. :o

Jonny tries hard in the mini-Ferrari with 40 psi in the front tyres.

Ciaran (passenger) : "I think your front tyre pressures are too high, Jonny."

Jonny : "FFS, they can't be, I checked them myself. There's only 40 psi in them. The Tour de France guys have about 120 psi in theirs and that's on bicycles!"

Ciaran : (Fearfully) "The next time we pass the pits, will you drop me off? I think I need the toilet."

Robbie coming out of Honda on the short back straight having passed Jonny, "My hand-built car has solid tyres!", and Matthew.

Robbie cool, calm and collected with two admirers watching "The King", just before the engine expired terminally. :(

Matthew, chasing "The King", lifts the near-side front wheel in a left-hander.

Matthew, a little more relaxed, makes good progress.

Matthew gets better acquainted with some yellow motoring history.

Excellent pics there. Doesn't look like it was Civic city there last weekend?

Strangely enough there were a few, but I guess Gaff wasn't 4r5ed photographing YACUC (Yet Another Ch@vved Up Civic).

There was one lad in "standard" 1.6 Civic who was consistently quick, apparently after 10,000 laps of the track. He won some Honda-sponsored challenge (can't remember the name of it) and because of the lines he took in and out of corners he left cars that were quicker on paper for dead.

I counted 3 205 GTIs (2 black, 1 red), a 190E, a Vauxhall Carlton 3.0L GSI, 2 ex-Japanese Mitsubishi 2.5L VR6 wagons (very quick), a stack of Scoobies, Skylines, Supras, Golfs and Evos, Lotus Elise / Exige, and a w@nk4r in a left-hooker Beemer who consistently tried undertaking people, contrary to the safety briefing.

Disappointingly, the marshals took no action with him but chose to black-flag one of our group twice, whose only "sin" was to have his tyre pressures too high initially.

Cool pictures, have you doctored them to make it look like your car was clean Patrick? :D

And what was the effect of running 40psi? Understeer?

I asked him what he was running and couldn't believe the pressure level, its no wonder it was all over the place .

No Will, a quick powerhose in the morning and an hour on the motorway - no time to get dirty.

More like no steer. The poor chap had 5 trips to the gravel in one lap, and 2 to the sin-bin.

some good pics there gaff...
