So is this the infamous lift off oversteer?

Featured Replies

F is 88, g is 89.

If we're being picky, F is Aug 88 to July 89, G Aug 89 to july 1990. I had an 88 F-plate Golf that still seems to be about. Doesn't seem that long ago either, but was over 10 years ago now :o

it was the 205 i referring to and i was guessing at its age :)

The 205 was famed for it, and for people running out of talent and landing in a ditch. This was before people started engineering the character out of cars :)

It's odd that for someone who likes character in cars that you drive a Leon TDI - I've never driven one (So feel free to tell me I'm wrong and to bugger off...), but I imagine that they haven't got that much character when being driven around? Especially compared to Pug 205s etc ;)

Character is an interesting description. Most of the cars I've driven that I would describe as having character have it because they have quirks or flaws which require driver skill to overcome. A lot of modern cars are too competent for their own good and as a result are not as fun or rewarding to drive as they don't present any challenges. However, there are still a good few new cars being produced which do break the mould ;)

The 205s I've had were both 1.1 or 1.2 (not sure any more) and it sure was interesting

They did me well though, in fairness

Heh.

The Leon's OK, and not as dull as one might think. It handles quite well despite the pikey tyres it has at the moment, and DSG is nice. It's a bit less characterful than the Fabia, but in fact is about as quick all round. It's also very comfortable.

I have it because (as ever) it's a compromise. I was getting terrible backache from the clutch in traffic (this from a standard Fabia vRS)- I'm currently recovering from an op for it- so I needed an auto. I need a derv because I have a longish commute, and the car needed to be not much longer than a Fabia to fit on the drive.

I *have* to have a VAG car. Every time I've had anything else I regret it.

That meant Golf, A3, or Leon. The Golf is (IMO) less stylish and more expensive.

The A3 fetches stupid money. Leon it is :-). I do miss the Fabia, but not the backache

The Lupo (wife's car!) gives me a bit of high-revving small hatch fun- It's got the same power/weight as a Fabia vRS, or thereabouts, but the delivery is soooo different- all revs. Provided I don't hit traffic it doesn't hurt to drive it, and if you do open it up you can fly past people in a yellow blur at 6K rpm.

 lol i loved at the new shape leon when i bought my fabia vrs and if i could of streched my budget more i would had 1 seat leon fr tdi wat a machine but no regrets the vrs is mind blowing puts a smile on my face everytime and the lift off around rround abouts is more than controllable

this is how you lift off in a proper car!

the best car i have driven for lift off over, was the corrado (before we ripped it apart).

but its all a matter of anti roll bar set-up, if the rear is stiffer than the front then you'll have easy lift off, it its to much stiffer at the rear you'll have easy death!!!!!!

An idiot in a 106 accelerated past me on the approach to a round about, breaking far too late, a miracle he didn't plough right into the roundabout, sufficed to say the resulting two sharp turns he was required to make resulted in sideways.... he was equally lucky to not slam his passenger side into a road sign.

I used to have a 206GTI and lets just say it could certainly be "interesting" at times. :D
