Worrying noise when braking in reverse (no, not the problem that others have posted)

Featured Replies

OK, i nearly had a heart attack when this happened as the noise was so loud. I was reversing then lightly touched the brakes when a noise that I can only describe as sounding like a fog horn echoed across the countryside! No idea what it was, it doesn't happen every time I reverse and brake - but it's happened twice so far. Doesn't sound good at all. Anyone have any ideas what it could be?

SWMBO's Fabia vRS does exactly the same thing. I suspect that the pads resonate on the discs. I'd also suspect that it can be cured by taking them out and lightly smearing the back of them with either brake grease or silicone grease.

mine did exactly the same, in tescos car park today.

all the young girlie type things, thought it was most amusing :o

hasn't done it since though

jonno.

My octy does it too, first time it did it i thought I had run over a sealion.

Congrats - you just made me laff out loud and then, as a double-whammy, I read it out to my missus who also laffed muchly

It is the same problem that others have posted. The dealer will remove the rear brake pads, clean them, chamfer them and use copper slip on the back of the pads. However the noise will eventually come back. There is, at the moment, no known cure for this problem. If your car is under warranty it will be done FOC. If you do it yourself you must have the correct tool to retract the brake piston if required.

Mine does that all the time after it's warmed up, dealer reckons it's normal i dont like it much especially at pub closing time when there is lots of people about - quite embarrassing! Nevermind, don't go backwards that often!

Yeah I have had the problem aswell but had it on my gsi turbo astra too, bit embarrasing but doesn't happen too often. :-)

Used to get that problem all the time with my Octy. Cured it by reversing faster and pressing the brakes harder.

Presume if I upgrade the brakes to 4 pot Brembos or something similar then the problem will go away?
