Will powder coating soften my alloys?

Featured Replies

I am booked tomorrow for sand blasting and powder coating my wheels. They are the original 16" Fabia vRS wheels. Now the problem is that I discussed with several mates of mine today and two of them instantly sad, because powder coating involves literally baking the wheels they will get softer after.

I got seriously concerned, because roads in Sofia aren't the best and pot holes aren't rare at all. Is what my frinds' saying true or false?!? I am powder coating my strut brace (Wiechers Sport) as well so the same for it?!

HELP! :)

I doubt it. It will only to bake the coating on. I doubt the wheels themselves will soften at all. You might find the powder coated surface is a bit softer than the surface of the oem finish. Don't worry about it. :D

Eh......no

It wont soften or damage the wheels in any way. If it does, go straight back and shout at them as they probably haven't done it correctly!

That is what I originally thought, but my mates scared me a bit.

Wheels will be graphite color.

Anyway, someone powder coated a set of wheels soon and got any softer?!

I've got powdercoated wheels and they've got 45,000 miles (65,000km) under them, so they don't seem to have suffered at all.

The wheels are only softer when there still hot (like butter in the fridge VS butter in the oven kinda thing).

Once there cool, there will be no problem.

it is possible to aneal aluminium if it's heated to a high enough temperature in an oven, but the powder coat oven wont be hot enough..

the most important thing when coating wheels is to make sure they are spotlessly clean by chemical cleaning then shot blasting otherwise baked on brake dust and salt from the roads will cause you no end of problems and will bubble off

They will be sand blasted completely before powder coating. Will this be enough?
