New diesel speculation - 1,6TDi

Featured Replies

I read a review on the Golf VI the other day... VW says they will soon introduce "a new 1,6TDi Commonrail powerplant, which will replace the outdated 1,9TDi". It will also have 105BHP, which leads me to a question - will Skoda also get this engine?

The reviewer also said, that VW's new 2,0TDi is as smooth and refined as any engine can me. "Forget the highly-praised BMW and Honda diesels - this one is a completely new level"... If Fabia comes with any of VW's new technologies, this makes buying one even more tempting. :-)

I guess 1,6TDi is lighter than it's older counterpart. And yes, I have to admin, the 1,9TDi is a bit too noisy...

I think the new 1.6TDi CR engine could pontentially replace both the existing 105BHP 1.9TDI and the 80BHP TDi as I believe the emmissions on the Golf with the 1.6CR engine are sub 100g/km and it's still 105bhp and it will of course be good on fuel.

If this engine came into the Fabia it would be a no brainer. As powerful as the 1.9TDi and better on fuel than the 1.4TDi. Cheaper to tax than the 1.4TDi and more refined than the 1.9TDi.

I hope it does come into both the Fabia and the Octavia, it would be good in the Superb also. Nice to get a Superb with C02 under 120g/km.

James, you're correct to say that the 1.6CR-TDI will replace the 1.9TDI-105hp.:D Yet the real 1.4TDI-70/80hp replacement will be a three cylinder version 1.2CR-TDI.

3 cylinder 1.2 diesel... not particularly enspiring on paper is it?!

Wonder what the power/torque/mpg is like on that.

Like the sound of the 1.6 cr tdi though...

Try 3/4 of what the 1.6CR 4-pot is making or the same as the outgoing 1.4TDI...

Didn't Audi use the 1.2 3CLY PD engine in the A2 3L and it averaged 84mpg or something?

They used it for an eco-race and averaged 128mpg when really trying. That engine with CR tech will be good.

A lot of people think the 1.4TDi will offer poor performance but as an allround engine I think it's better than the 1.9TDi, it's not very often you miss the extra performance.

A 1.6 TDI in an octavia should be more than enough to do the job , and if it gets 10% or more MPG than the old 1.9 with the same performance it will sell well.

A while back I remember reading in Auto Express about the MK2 Fabia VRS and it was to be powered by a new CR 1.6 135hp oil burner they went on to say this engine will be in the Ibiza and Audi's A1.

I have driven the A2 with a 3 pot derv, admittedly not the 1.2 though, and it was really not too bad at all :)

i'd love to see a 1.6 cr tdi but with about 120/130 bhp and be badged sport and give skoda something to rival fiesta zetec s mini cooper corsa sri etc etc but with more flexability (5 doors) yes c'mon skoda do it

Hmmmm talking to the South East gang in Maidstone last week and they told me that it is only the U.K that has a taste for small performance Diesels so may not be demand.:thumbdwn: I would be interested to try a 1.6 Fabia, does anyone know when the transition will be? I will miss the 1.4 TDI though. I know it is a loveit/loathe it engine but I like its sound a lot, Diesel fours sound so boring.

Matt, being a diesel man / fan / supporter myself, with the way the fuel is priced now where I live, I reckon the only reason to go diesel is just because you simply like the way it drives. I do, but...

Heck, I have calculated, that doing around 20000 miles per year, I "save" only around 350 pounds a year on fuel. But servicing a diesel is more expensive, and because you never know what kind of fuel you pour into the tank, you may well end up with a broken fuel pump which costs a million pounds.

Just yesteday I tested the new VW Scirocco - me and my fiancee are really into it, and I tried both - the new 2,0TDi (CR) and 1,4TSI (the 160bhp one). Both drive practically the same (with the diesel still outpowering it's petrol brother in 6th gear / low rpms), but I am not seeing enough reason to overspend 3000,- EUR just to have a TDI badge on the back...

Can't wait for the new Golf, really...

Do you drive a petrol or diesel now?

What did you think to the looks of the Scirocco?

I drive a 2006 Audi A4 2,0TDi with MultiTronic gearbox. Basically this the only gearbox I would trade a manual for - no shifting required, but it instantly understands your needs, be it a slight acceleration in town or overtaking on highway... Don't like the DSG for it's stupiduty or the traditional automatic for it's lack of connection between the throttle and the road.

The looks of Scirocco... It is amazing. The only thing - I seriously think VW logo should be on the grill, not on the bonnet - the car simply doesn't look right at the moment... I know coupes are not practical, but since I now seriously think about a 3-door Golf (the 6th generation that's just come out), it might be a good alternative... However, I don't want to pay that extra 6000,- EUR just for the roof which is a tad lower and the stiffer GTI chassis...

What Diesel Mag. reports that the Mk Vi Golf will be launched next Jan. with the current 2.0l engine but with CR injection. The 1.6L CR will be available later. I would like a

1.6L CR Fabia L&K Estate with Ncap 5*, but I'm afraid that's an impossible dream.

:(

I would second that actually given that price differential. I would like to see a new VRS with that Twin charge motor.:D However read in evo that this engine is not as good as the old 170 bhp tune and VW have downtuned it to lower the emissions BAH:mad: Will have to drive one I guess, I know the SEAT Ibiza Cupra is coming out with a 180 BHP Twincharge next year but only with DSG which puts me off as I like a proper change. Only thing with the Twincharge is that with blower and turbo and a whole lot of sensors and rubber belts controlling the whole "bang shiboodle" it would cost a fortune if it went pop:(

Matt, I have also had a chance to drive the current (Mk V) Golf with 1,4TSI in it's 122bhp specification. It doesn't have the supercharger to help the turbo lag, but does have a turbocharger to... To turbocharge, actually. Well, if you drive like a sensible person, you'll never notice any lag at all, but say, if you're doing like 15mph in second gear, and suddently remember there's an iron on in your house, you will notice the engine not being on the responsible side until around 2000rpm.

I like it though. 160bhp is more lively and fun, and probably is more suitable for me (I do lots of both - city and country roads, when I sometimes like to pull out to overtake and give it the beans), and extra power always feels nice even if you use all of it once in a month...

Yeah I heard that the basic 122bhp engine was good, so much so that VW couldn't supply it in the Golf and had to go back to fitting the 1.6 FSI engine because they ad excess stocks (doesn't surprise me going by my experience of that engine in an Octy). Looking on the Skoda Auto site it will be the base engine in the Octavia and curently does same job in the Leon. I don't know if SEAT has a supply problem but I guess each co in the group is given an allocation. I must admit to liking low down grunt however so the 160 preferable!

One rumour was that there would be the 1.6 with 70, 105 and 135 bhp and a 1.2 with 75 bhp (all cr). The 1.2 being a bluemotion/greenline/ecomotive... I wonder what the difference in economy/emissions/performance and price will be between the 70 hp 1.6 and the 75 hp 1.2. They'll prob be in the polo first anyway though!!!

We have the 1.4 tdi 80 and I love the kick you get at around 1800 rpm. The wife says it's a lot noisier than her dad's 1.6 tdci 90 focus, so would like a cr engine next. I must say while his focus is smoother and more progressive it didn't seem to have the same kick in the back, despite it having more torque etc. I'm unsure whether my wife's want for a smooth engine is enough to give up the kick you get from pd... Only time will tell.

Actually all the VW / Audi turbodiesels I've come across have this punch. I drove a 1,9TDi Passat (131bhp), and it was very punchy around 1700rpm. The 2,0TDi I have now in an A4 is about the same, but somehow it doesn't give you that sence of a punch - its more of a strong push, if you know what I mean...

But yes, a Fabia with 135bhp would be yammee... ;-)

God! GOD! Just back to the office - used my lunch break to visit a local VW dealer - they received the first Golf Mk VI this Monday. Got a chance to drive the new 2,0TDi Common Rail car with 6-speed manual box.

God! The silence inside the car is divine. Never in my life have I driven a diesel car, that seemed more complete in every sense of the word!

If they transfer this motor to Skoda (and I'm sure they will eventually), all you Skoda people will nurse a semen. :-)

Honestly, I am not impressed, I am shocked.

The car itself? Magnificent in one word.

Hi

does anyone know if the 1.6 CRD is actually planed for introduction to the Fabia, or do we just see this as probable?

Similarly for the 1.4T petrol 122bhp.

I think both these engines would sit well in the Fabai range, offering the performance and refinement in the mainstream model ie non vRS/GTI, which is already available with some competitors

I might fall in love with TSI Roomster :)

I might fall in love with TSI Roomster :)

I know what you mean.

Not wishing to turn this into a Roomster thread, but I think the Roomster is big enough to be seen as a family car by some and might benefit from having some slightly more powerful engines available too.
