Help! My Octavia is ticking (indicator buzzer fault?)

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have a 51 plate Octavia which I've had 2 Years and has and still does perform well. yesterday whilst overtaking I indicated ect. on cancelling the indicator everything seemed normal except a couple of second later the indicator buzzer continued although the lights had stopped. This is now constant and to me it sounds like a short circuit. The Haynes manual isn't easy to navigate and although I'm very practically minded I wanted to ask the group if anyone had any quick fixes. since yesterday as soon as I turn the ignition on it starts ticking away like a pipe bomb until I arrive at my destination and switch the car off. the sound slows down to "normal" when indicating or using hazard lights but once they are cancelled it goes back to ticking away at double speed!!

I'm not the best person in the world at explaining faults so hopefully someone can make sence of the above.

Best wishes

Giles

I suspect this is related to the indicator relay which is behind / part of the hazard light warning switch. I think some people have had success at cleaning up the relay, otherwise it can be changed for a new one.

That seems most likely to me too. The hardest part of changing the relay is not scratching the plastics when getting the hazard switch out!

cheers will have a play at the weekend and see what I can find :)

Could also be the indicator stalk. I had this earlier in the year, and tried cleaning the relay with no effect. However, I later swapped the stalk, as part of fitting cruise control, and the problem disappeared.

Have a search on here, there are a few threads about this. Some suggest cleaning the mechanism inside the steering column.

hi it will be the indicator stalk it is a common faut on the oct . if the relay had gone down they wouldn't work at all.

on 306s this happens too. it is the indicator stalk. you can try cleaning the contacts inside, but its easiest just to get a new one, or one from a scrappy

yes, another probably relay from me,well documented on here, and an easy fix.

The double-speed ticking will be because the relay has detected it doesn't have a "full load" connected to it. They do that to alert you when you have a broken bulb. I thought I heard that the hazard switch and relay was a known weak point, too.
