cheap TTS short shifter: anybody?

Featured Replies

I decided to swap over to the Audi short shifter (from my Neuspeed one) as my wife has started using my car and commented on the awful gearchange! Can't really blame her as it is, to a degree, an acquired taste. ;)

Rather that reverting to my OE shifter I have taken the view that if the Audi part is OK for them on an OE basis it ought to be OK for me.

Therefore have ordered an 8J0 711 051 B for collection tomorrow, except that the part has been modified/upgraded and is now 8J0 711 046-B. Hope to get it fitted tomorrow lunchtime. :)

straight forward and simple; took me about an hour BUT at least half that time was moving the air intake to get at the shifter and putting it back after.

Hi Simon

because you already modified your intake, it will not be a difficult thing to change.

BUT for the older TFSI (not the newer TSI or TDI) the biggest problem will be removing the original air intake.

Changing the shifter itself is a straight forward job. It might stick a bit on the axle, but you can always carefully use a hammer (small light strokes on the axle to loosen the shifter) while pulling on the shifter. (or a small bearing puller).

So can you tell us how the Audi shifter compares with the Nuspeed? Presumably slighlty longer throw but not so 'clunky'?

Difference in throw is reported in earlier posts but is;

OE - 12.5cm

Audi - 10cm

N'peed - 8cm

Certainly Neuspeed vs OE is noticeably heavier, but you get used to it and is short enough that it is just a flick of the wrist (with arm resting on jumbo) to change gear. I'll report later on the Audi comparison (once fitted).

Sorry, I took it from your earlier 'fitted in under an hour' post that you'd already done the Audi job...

do you have the part number for the Audi one you have used?

Ah ha! No, no. ;)

That was to fit my Neuspeed shifter; I'm swapping to the Audi one tomorrow - job is the same just a different part.

Got my Audi one (part no as above) fitted at lunchtime. Throw of the gearshift checked at 10cm. Only took me half an hour, including moving my air intake around.

We need more than that! How is it, compared to the Neuspeed? Less clunky? More precise? And does it still get the 'awful gearchange' vote from your wife?

Give me a chance! I changed it at lunchtime and have not driven the car yet (still in the office)! :D

Will report fully in due course.

Ooops sorry. And thanks.

bahnstormer - anything to report yet??

Well; ....... not driven far but have to say that the Audi short(er) shift feels very much like the OE shift, except its shorter. Quite light and well balanced; it will suit pretty much any driver.

Naturally needs a bit more movement than the Neuspeed short shifter and any gearchange is no longer just 'a flick of the wrist'. It also lacks the meatiness of the Neuspeed.

Overall; I'd suggest the Audi short shifter is a good low cost improvement that will suit all drivers, but the Neuspeed short shifter is prefect for the committed enthusiast. :D;)

do you fancy doing quick write up so I can see if its within my technical abilities! How much was the audi part by the way?

Fitting is really quite simple; here are Neuspeed's instructions http://neuspeed.com/data/installs/66.10.94.pdf

Otherwise you just need to get access to the shifter by (possibly) moving the air intake.

Cost of Audi part c. £26.50

Good luck
