Me being the lazy sort backs up when I remember to hit the button. I'd like to know if there are any tools out there you use or know of that are used that will replicate drives over a lan when they are connected or at a schedule/soonest possible.

Hardware: USB drive or Win2003Server, just lacking the nouse with the latter, bound to be somthing obvious I've overlooked.

Thanks in advance....

Trying to perform replication/mirroring/ghosting whatever of a traveling device eg laptop to static drives say a server in the corner for backing up to a tape drive... but semi automatically eg on connection/detection of travelling device.

Can happily mount drives, although alcohol does save alot of carrying of cd's it's not what I'm after unless it's been heavily developed.

So ntbackup but with AI to know when my laptop is connected to drives...I'm guessing work offline network mapped might do it...but it really ticks me off when it synchs at log on or off.

You could try rsync. It's got its roots in the Unix community, but I think it would definitely do what you want.

Check out http://www.gaztronics.net/rsync.php for some more information.

Bagpuss.

I used a pice of software that came with my primary storage drive that copied all of the files to the pcmcia drive... wasn't very good. and I can't remeber what it was called... my memory is getting bad... sorry

Could use Altirs type app on the server to image the machine via a scheduled job a night.. using WOL

These people offer various synchronisation tools for Windows...

I've used products from them for synchronising laptops with servers and also for doing "quick" copies of servers to NAS.
