Fitting Poly Arb bushes

Featured Replies

Just a quick question - and the answer may be obvious - but when fitting the superpro poly arb bushes do you break off the old plastic collar and run the bush direct on the bar?

What do you mean ???

The collar that stops them sliding along the bar or the plastic coating.

I left everything as it was and just replaced the bush.

Well the original unit is effectively in three parts - the clamp, the rubber bush and the plastic collar insert that allows the bar to rotate. It's the collar that cracks and allows the bar to begin to corrode I think.

The hole in the original bush is big enough to go round the collar and the bar but the poly bush appears to be sized to just sit direct on the bar without the collar/insert.

As I remember it, the collared bit doesn't move although I didn't specifcly check,

What model are you talking about VRS or another as I have a VRS so if you are talking about another model I may be of no use too you whatsoever.

2003 vrs

Yes you must break off the plastic collar and have the new bush against the bar. Water gets under the collar and corrodes the bar causing the problem. You may need a new bar also if it is badly corroded where the collar sits.

LOL.............I'm completely confused now.

When you say the collar you mean the washer type bit that kind of holds the bar in place ????

I think you may be thinking of the revised bar with the metal collar, original bars didn't have this and used a plastic collar under the bush. Water gets under the collar and rusts the bar causing the squeak. New bar uses the metal collar as the bush stop and the bush clamps directly to the bar now

I do have the revised bar fitted............It all makes sense now, Thanks

Glad to have facilitated that learning experience and thanks very much to both of you for your help.

Well I have to say that was a pig of a job. Getting the old bushes off was no problem but getting the driver's side on was a complete pain in the bum. It's a three handed job in a space just about big enough for 2 thumbs. It took me a good couple of hours before I got lucky and the bolt caught in the thread.

You can tell that whoever designed it was never expecting to have to change one themselves.
