clunk- gearbox mount? which one?

Featured Replies

Hello all- Another wee annoyance with my '00 Felicia

I've checked the threads, and think I know what my problem is. I just had my clutch changed, and now it has a bit more bite. However, the car clunks and thumps when letting out the clutch sharply, and when pushing in the clutch as well. I can hear the gear linkage rattling and the exhaust at the back. For some reason it seems worse when someone is in the backseat.

I'm thinking its a gearbox mount letting the engine bounce around and rattle everything.

Now, my question, is which one would it be- I can't see anything visibly wrong, but I think one is the engine steady, which seems the likely culprit.

Does anyone have a pic, or might I be on the wrong track and its something else?

Many thanks!

Brian

The engine staybar seems likely. In bad cases you can rock the top end back and forwards by hand, with the staybar still connected!

Have a look at the picture at the bottom of this thread

I fitted a new mount (look at the bottom left)

I had a new mount fitted (where the gearbox meets the engine) and that didnt stop the clunking, think the other half of the mount needed changing too.

I have a scan of the part numbers given to me by the dealers. I'll fish it out.

probably caused from your exhaust mounting bushes for back box

several times i noticed that problem in my felicia.

when someone sits backseat car gets lower and exhaust pipe touches rear axle .

thats the problem.

in the picture i tried to show where pipe touches with axle

Mine clunks and that only started happening after the clutch change too.

Welcome to club clunk :D

Mine's very quiet but with someone in the back the exhaust clunks over any bumps. It's so rare for anyone to be in the back that I'm happy to live with it. I'll not use ATS in the future though. They fitted the exhaust and I have already returned for it to be lowered. It constantly banged about when first fitted.

mine has a clunking noise since i have had a new clutch recantly when i am going along at about 30mph in 5th take foot off the accelerator and press it again can hear like a clunking..

hmmm; at least it sounds like its a common complaint. Thanks everyone- so it looks like it may be a combination of rubber bits- gearbox mounts, engine stay, and exhaust rubber.

Is the engine stay the top mounting on the gearbox side that you can see from under the bonnet, or is it on the engine itself?

Thanks everyone,

Brian

it will be the one on the bottom left of this picture

i disagree i had this same progblem and change the engine mount on the top right of the engine by the water pump and clunk went bye bye........ also it seems the exaust mounts have a tendency to burst i went thru two already...... finally got fed up and just tie up everything with straps.... keep extra straps in the car just in case :)
