DOH - Under Tray Ripped Off

Featured Replies

Just been up to a firework display and had to get pushed out of some mud by the attendants ...... as did half of the people who went :(

Problem is there was a mad scrapping noise when backing up slightly and moving forward to get myself out of the dip!

After a 10-15 mile drive the car seems to be going perfectly but the under tray looks as if it has been completely ripped off on one side. One screw remains on the left hand side...... the middle is just hanging freely with holes where I presume the screws should be (and hopefully still are in the body) The right hand one is fully attached.

I can't see properly in this light but it looks like its split..... possibly at the body?

Anyone else had this happen? Is it possible to fix without buying a fully new guard?

You could always fix the undertray with some aluminium strips and some pop-rivets if it has split. However if has damaged the screw holes around the side this could be harder to fix....

Or not bother; the undertray is mostly for sound deadening, and a bit to keep the engine bay clean.

In day light it didn't seem too bad. I've managed to slide the screw and nut back into place so it holds. If it gets another whack though i'll probably be needing another one.

KenONeill - i've read elsewhere it protects engine sensors too?

It protects the belts from water and it does improve the aerodynamics. You get a noticeable loss of MPG when it is missing!

So a trick for the go faster vRS boys then; fit a TDi undershield!

I was amazed by the difference when I logged the MPG. This was a regular 45 mile run.

I was searching for a coolant leak and had the undertray off on the runs preceded by a '*'.

that is quite a difference..... my 110 tdi only managed about 50mpg (indicated) on the m/way at a 70-75 indicated speed (65-70 actual from gps) today. Not overly impressed, but it is within 600 miles of a service so I suspect the airfilter is suitably dirty (last changed 30k ago), and winter fuels might be aving some affect too.

Last weekend I went up to Llanberis and averaged about 55MPG (indicated) at a constant 70 (GPS) on the motorway.

Similar problem some years ago.

I found that too much air was getting under the bonnet at high speeds making it flutter alot which seemed dangerous. I fixed the undertray with some metal plate and extra screws/pop rivets and it's been OK since.
