Sky+ Upgrade Advice

Featured Replies

Hello again.

Just a quick one... has anyone got any experience of threatening to leave Sky in the hope that they'd give you a free/cheaper upgrade to Sky+?

My inlaws have had basic Sky for ages but now want Sky+ after seeing ours. I'd hate for Sky to call their bluff!

Luke.

It normally works, when you cancel you give 30 days notice, during that 30 days you can rejoin at any time on a month by month basis but they will have called you before then.

You hear loads of tales of sky offering things when you phone them to cancel

I have tried that trick on two occasions

Both times i got nothing,not a bean,nada

One time i went as far as cancelling my subscription to save face:rolleyes:r

Same here,I cancelled Sky and thought maybe they would contact me and offer me a better package ,but they didnt:rolleyes:, so i went out and bought a freesat box ,not as many channels (only about 400 :P) but it has got HD:thumbup:

Ive been pondering about buying a freesat box and binning sky

but

Rumours are ripe that sky are going to drop the £10 hd subscription in the spring

So i will probably stick with sky until the summer

I'm with you okeh, the moment they drop that £10 pm fee ill be getting HD

Hmmm - doesn't sound too hopeful! Upto them if they want to take the risk I guess.

However, I'm after more storage in my standard + box so I can either upgrade the disk or maybe buy a HD box and then they could have my standard + box. I'll keep an eye out for a cheapish standard + box too.

I was tempted by the recent HD box upgrade for £75 but I don't want the extra HD subscription. At least BBC1 HD is free if I bought one 2nd hand.

I've had Sky + for a couple of years.

Was originally quoted about £260 installed cost, and eventually got it for £60 after threatening to cancel.

I had to speak to the "Do You Want to Leave Department", the "Do You Really Want to Leave Department", the "Are You Sure You Want to Leave Department" and the "Are You Absolutely and Positively Sure You Want to Leave Department" before I finally got sorted. Worth persevering though.

I got my mum upgraded to sky + and had to go though the above quote.

From £260 down to £49 to upgrade, worth persevering though.:)

I'm after more storage in my standard + box.

The newer sky+ boxes have 160Gb of storage instead of the older sky + boxes with 40Gb(but i think you only get to use 80Gb of it,with the rest for sky to use)

I think the HD boxes with the bigger storage capacity get used up fast due to HD quality using up more Gbs

Which package are they on? The more they're paying per month, the more likely Sky are to want them to stay :)

Yeah, we had Sky+ at the beginning of the year so was a 160Gb disk but divided evenly between Sky Anytime and your own recordings. If I got a HD box it would be 2nd hand without the HD subscription so would be recording standard def telly anyway to take advantage of the extra space.

'Tis a good point but I think they reduced their subscription from paying for movies and the like to just two extra packs - so now £19 a month. Didn't 'packs' used to be called 'mixes'?

But they have been a customer for donkeys. They also have the phone line through them and want to move away from Tiscali broadband...

Gone are the days when you can call up Sky and demand anything.

To a point I can see where they are coming from - they really aren't making that much money on the boxes, especially the Sky HD units.

They have enough customers so that they won't really miss the odd person who does take the cancellation right through.

The Sky + boxes have 160GB HD's in, but you'll lose 80GB due to Sky Anytime which although can be disabled you cannot get the 80GB back for your own use.

The Sky+ box can internally format up to 320GB, so you can do a manual HD upgrade.

The Sky HD box comes with a 320GB HD, however once again you lose a chunk to Sky Anytime.

The Sky HD boxes can internally format upto 500GB, so once again a HD upgrade is quite easy - although not with the Samsung Sky HD boxes as they have a PSU issue that means they are extremely picky on which HD you install.

HD programs really do take up a lot of space, I can record a 1hr program in HD and lose 5% of my available storage with the original 320GB HD.

Unfortunately I have a Samsung HD box so am awaiting some testing to see which 500GB unit I can install.
